Sara Schembri and Vanessa Vella placed first and second respectively in a letter-writing competition for students under 16 organised recently by the Unesco Club (Malta) in collaboration with the International Correspondence Club as part of its 40th anniversary celebrations.

Forty-eight students from various schools and colleges took part in the competition, of which 25 came from St Benedict's College. In fact, both winners attend the college and are in the same class, Form 2E.

The participants' entries consisted of either a letter to a friend on the advantages of letter-writing; a letter to a foreign friend suggesting why he or she should visit Malta, or an essay on Malta stamps as an incentive to stamp collectors.

Schembri's prize was a collection of Malta stamps issued between 1964 and 2004, while Vella received a Playstation 3.

The entries were judged by Unesco Club chairman Albert Rutter, Josephine Vassallo from the Department of Education, and Mary Grace Farrugia from Maltapost. Education Minister Dolores Cristina presented the prizes in a short ceremony at her ministry.
