St Andrews is the UK’s most expensive destination for hotel guests, according to a new survey.

Visitors to the Fife university town paid an average £162 per night in 2010 – a 20 per cent increase on last year’s bill.

The rise – fuelled by the Open golf championship in the summer – saw Bath knocked off the top spot in the survey by Hotels.com. Norwich experienced the biggest price jump of 38 per cent, which has been attributed in part to demand from football supporters after Norwich City’s promotion to the Championship.

A room in the city went up from an average £56 to £78 in a year.
