St Andrews bagged a crucial win when they edged Tarxien Rainbows 1-0 at the Hibs Stadium.

The Saints have now leapfrogged Gżira United and joined Ħamrun Spartans in eighth place on 27 points, 11 points clear of the relegation zone.

The Saints played the better football throughout the first half but had to wait until stoppage time to grab what proved to be the winner.

From an Ivan Paz corner kick, Michael Johnson anticipated his marker to head the ball past Tarxien goalkeeper Philip Schranz.

Tarxien fought back after the break and first Ebiabowei Baker’s shot just missed the upright while on 65 minutes Jake Galea produced a fine save on Triston Caruana.

But despite Tarxien’s pressure the Saints held on for a precious win.

Michael Johnson, of St Andrews, was voted as the BOV Player of the match.
