Tottenham Hotspur were the first winners of the UEFA Cup after the competition’s name was changed in 1971-72. The Spurs beat Wolves 3-2 on aggregate in an all-English final.

In 1974, Tottenham also reached the final of the UEFA Cup but failed to regain the trophy after going down to Feyenoord (4-2 on aggregate). A decade later, in 1984, Tottenham returned to the top step of the podium after lifting the UEFA Cup for the second time in their history at the expense of Belgium’s Anderlecht who lost on penalties.

Tottenham’s 1984 win was the fifth success in the competition for English clubs since the old Fairs Cup became defunct in 1971.

Tony Parks, one of the heroes in the shoot-out against Anderlecht, currently forms part of Harry Redknapp’s staff as coach to goalkeeper Heurelho Gomes.
