Athletics: Charlotte Wingfield (picture) and Luke Bezzina failed to progress to the semi-finals of the 60 metres at the European Indoor Championships in Belgrade, yesterday. Wingfield placed sixth in the second heat when clocking 7.50 seconds… 0.06 seconds outside her national mark she set in Wales last January. On his part, Bezzina also finished sixth in his heat when clocking 7.02. His time was 0.16 slower than the current national record held by Darren Gilford.

Basketball, NBA: The Cleveland Cavaliers have been on a three-point binge since the first of the year. On Friday, they took it step further and set an NBA record in the process. The Cavs, who have made at least 10 in their last 13 games, made 25 three-pointers in the 135-130 win over the Atlanta Hawks on Friday night in Atlanta. That topped the regular-season record of 24 set on Dec. 16, 2016 by the Houston Rockets against Orlando. The Cavs also made 25 against the Hawks in the playoffs last year. “It should have been more,” Cleveland coach Tyronn Lue said.

Golf: Rory McIlroy proved better at holing out from the fairway than making short putts on his way to a two-stroke lead after the second round at the WGC-Mexico Championship in Mexico City on Friday. McIlroy made eagle with a nine-iron from 151 yards at the par-four 14th and would have enjoyed a commanding halfway lead had his putter not gone cold at the end. The Northern Irishman missed a four-foot par putt at the 17TH hole and then horseshoed-out from three feet at the last for a six-under-par 65 at Club de Golf Chapultepec.

Snooker: Judd Trump racked up three centuries on his way to a 4-1 victory over Matthew Selt in the fifth round of the Jojobet.com Gibraltar Open. Trump rifled in breaks of 112, 103 and 129 on his way to an emphatic victory to book his place in the last 16. There were also wins for Mark Allen, a 4-1 winner over David Gilbert, and Neil Robertson, who saw off Rhys Clark 4-2.

Cricket: England captain Eoin Morgan blazed a fluent 107 to help secure a 45-run victory over West Indies in the first one-day international at a windy Sir Vivian Richards Stadium on Friday. Having been sent in to bat, England posted 296 for six in their 50 overs before the hosts were bowled out for 251 in 47.2 after never quite managing to stay up with the required run-rate. The second ODI will be played at the same venue tomorrow, before the series finale in Barbados on Thursday.

Cycling: Jody Cundy produced a stunning ride to win his ninth consecutive one kilometre time-trial UCI Para-cycling World Championship title in Los Angeles. Cundy has never been beaten over 1km at the world championships and it was the 13th world title of his career. Setting off last of the 11 riders in the field, Cundy recorded a time of one minute 05.614 seconds to beat Slovakia’s Jozef Metelka into second place by more than half a second.
