Motor Racing: F1 bosses have agreed to ditch the new qualifying format after it was roundly panned at the season-opening Australian Grand Prix and revert to the old system for the second race of the season in Bahrain. The new format, based on drivers being progressively eliminated during the sessions rather than at the end of them, was intended to add excitement but instead took away any suspense with no cars on track in the final minutes.

Athletics: American Ashton Eaton successfully defended his world indoor championships heptathlon title on Saturday to complete a husband-and-wife golden double that the couple will aim to repeat at the Rio Olympics. After Canadian Brianne Theisen-Eaton won the pentathlon on Friday, Eaton followed suit by posting a winning total of 6,470 points, the sixth highest ever to make them the first married couple to win golds at the same World Championships.

Tennis: Victoria Azarenka took advantage of an error-prone display by Serena Williams to win her second BNP Paribas Open title with a 6-4 6-4 victory in yesterday’s final at Indian Wells in California. The 26-year-old Belarusian broke the top-seeded American once in the opening set and twice in the second before wrapping up the win in just under 90 minutes in front of a stunned crowd at the sun-baked Indian Wells Tennis Garden.

Men’s final: Djokovic bt Raonic 6-2 6-0.
