Cycling: Mark Cavendish has withdrawn from the Great Britain team for next week’s Road Cycling World Championships with a shoulder injury. The 30-year-old from the Isle of Man won the 2011 title – emulating Tom Simpson’s 1965 success – and had a chance of victory in Richmond, Virginia, but collided into a stationary car at the Tour of Britain last week. Adam Yates has been added to the squad after Geraint Thomas also withdrew, citing fatigue, and an additional rider is likely to be added to the squad to replace Cavendish.

Basketball: A resilient Spain beat holders and hosts France 80-75 after overtime to reach tomorrow’s European Championship final and clinch an Olympic berth thanks to a breathtaking performance from their captain Pau Gasol. The Chicago Bulls centre scored 40 points and collected 11 rebounds to set up a showdown with Lithuania who last night upset Serbia 67-64. The top two teams from the 24-nation tournament will advance to next year’s games in Rio de Janeiro.

Cricket: Former Australia wicketkeeper Brad Haddin will move into coaching to pass on his knowledge to the next generation of local cricketers, coach Darren Lehmann has said. The 37-year-old Haddin retired last week after keeping wickets in 66 tests, scoring 3,266 runs at an average of 32.98 and taking 262 catches. “We can’t afford to lose those blokes to the game,” Lehmann told reporters. “We need him to pass on the knowledge to the next generation which will stand them in good stead.”
