Snooker: Defending champion Stuart Bingham has breezed into the quarter-finals of the Shanghai Masters. Bingham was in complete control as he won 5-1 against Mike Dunn, who only managed a highest score of 61 in the match, to take a spot in the last eight. The performance highlights a return to form for the 39-year-old, given he has had a slow start to the season and failed to make it beyond the last 32 before this. Martin Gould is up next for Bingham after he stunned John Higgins 5-3, with a highest break of 92.

Basketball: Former winners Lithuania booked a semi-final clash with Serbia after they beat Italy 95-85 in overtime, while the high-flying Serbs overpowered the Czech Republic 89-75 in the European Championships on Wednesday night. The Italians threw away their last possession in regulation and were punished in overtime as Jonas Valanciunas capped an outstanding individual performance. The event is also doubling as an Olympic qualifying tournament with the top two sides advancing straight to the Rio Games next year, while the next five-ranked sides enter inter-continental qualifiers.

Boxing: South African boxer Mzwanele Kompolo has died after a first round knockout in a fight on Tuesday, the country’s sports ministry has said. Kompolo, 22, was floored in the opening stages of the fight by Siphenathi Qampi, and soon afterwards collapsed following the bout sanctioned by Boxing South Africa. He was initially treated at the ringside, before being taken to hospital in Frere, but never regained consciousness.
