Basketball: The United States became the first country since 1983 to successfully defend its title, holding off Croatia 79-71 after overtime in Sunday’s final in Greece to claim the 2015 FIBA U-19 World Championship. It was the sixth US U-19 title as four players scored in double figures paced by Jalen Brunson’s 14 points. Turkey ended up in the top three for the first time ever by beating hosts Greece 80-71 in the third-place play-off.

Golf: World number one Rory McIlroy has revealed that he has ruptured ligaments in his left ankle during a football kickabout. McIlroy announced the news via Twitter, with an accompanying photograph on Instagram showing himself on crutches and wearing a protective boot. The news comes less than a fortnight when McIlroy is due to defend his Open Championship title, although the Northern Irishman has not yet ruled himself out of the event at St Andrews. McIlroy tweeted: “Continuing to assess extent of injury and treatment plan day by day. Rehab already started... working hard to get back as soon as I can.”

Rugby Union: Hooker Stephen Moore will lead Australia to this year’s World Cup after being named captain for the season by coach Michael Cheika. Moore, 32, was also named captain last year by then coach Ewen McKenzie only to be ruled out for the rest of the season by a knee injury in the first few seconds of his first test in charge against France. Australia open their season with a Rugby Championship test against South Africa in Brisbane on July 18 and face England, Wales, Fiji and Uruguay in the pool stage at the World Cup.
