Hoyzer: German referee Robert Hoyzer, at the centre of the country's worst soccer corruption scandal in over 30 years, has been remanded in custody after being arrested. Hoyzer's lawyer had said he expected Hoyzer to be released after being questioned about new evidence suggesting he had knowledge of attempts at match fixing prior to games in 2004, which he has admitted receiving payments to fix. The Berlin prosecutors office said he was being held on charges of eight counts of suspected organised fraud.

Eto'o: Barcelona striker Samuel Eto'o said his dancing goal celebration in Saturday's 4-1 win away to Real Zaragoza was a response to the racist abuse he received during the game. "I danced like a monkey because they treated me like a monkey," said the 24-year-old Cameroon international. Eto'o was greeted by monkey chants when he touched the ball and peanuts were thrown on to the pitch after he scored. Referee Fernando C. Mendez did not mention the incidents in his match report, commenting only that the behaviour of the crowd was "normal".

Ronaldo: Brazilian striker Ronaldo is giving his fiancee a romantic St Valentine's day present - a lavish engagement party at a sumptuous and secluded castle outside Paris with about 250 guests. The Real Madrid player has reportedly invited team-mates Zinedine Zidane, David Beckham and Raul to today's party at Chantilly chateau just north of Paris and is flying them in by private jet. Brazilian media put the estimated cost at around €700,000, although they say the couple could earn €400,000 by selling exclusive photo rights to Spanish magazine Hola!.

In Scotland: The Scottish Premier League match between Inverness Caledonian Thistle and champions Celtic yesterday was postponed because of a waterlogged pitch. Rangers, who have 62 points from 25 games, went top on goal difference on Saturday with a 3-0 demolition of third-placed Hibernian at Ibrox. Celtic have a game in hand on their Old Firm rivals.

MIDO: Tottenham Hotspur striker Mido apologised yesterday for his lack of discipline that has seen him excluded from the Egyptian national team since July. "There isn't much I have to say today, all there is to say is that I came specially from England to Egypt to rejoin the national team and to apologise for all my mistakes," the 21-year-old, whose full name is Ahmed Hossam, said. Mido, who has 34 caps, was axed by Egypt's former coach Marco Tardelli after claiming he had a groin injury, but he then played in a friendly for his club Roma within 24 hours of a World Cup qualifying match at home to Cameroon last September.
