"The conditions are not ideal for the tournament to begin on February 19 as had been planned," said the Peruvian football league (ADFP) in a statement. The decision came after the players' union, which also held a two-month strike in 2003 and forced that year's championship to be abandoned, demanded that the clubs honour a schedule drawn up last year for the payments of wages owed to the players. The union said Peruvian champions Alianza Lima and rivals Universitario had failed to keep to the payments schedule.
