Nowotny: Bayer Leverkusen captain Jens Nowotny has been ruled out for the rest of the season with a knee ligament injury. The Germany defender suffered a recurrence of the injury in his side's 4-2 win over FC Nuremberg on Saturday. "Jens is out for the rest of the campaign for sure but he will be back for next season, of that I am convinced," sporting director Rudi Voeller said yesterday.

Fan jailed: A Burnley fan has been jailed for five months after confronting Blackburn Rovers midfielder Robbie Savage during Sunday's goalless FA Cup fifth round tie. Michael Lewis, 42, was sentenced by Burnley magistrates yesterday after being charged with breaching a football banning order, going onto Burnley's Turf Moor pitch and assaulting a police officer.

Keeper Scores: Goalkeeper Rogerio Ceni scored from a free-kick as Sao Paulo beat arch-rivals Palmeiras 3-0 to make it an unhappy debut for the home team's new coach Candinho on Sunday. The writing was on the wall for Palmeiras when striker Grafite had his shirt pulled on the goal-line in the fifth minute of Brazil's Paulista championship match and Diego Tardelli fired home the resulting penalty. Rogerio Ceni put the game beyond Palmeiras's reach in the 75th minute when he floated a free-kick over the wall and into the net for the 35th goal of his career.

Ronaldo: Ronaldo says he is fully focused on today's Champions League tie against Juventus and has not been distracted by the attention generated by his engagement celebrations. "I haven't got any apologies to make," the Real Madrid striker said. "I'm a professional and a very responsible person. In the last two weeks even the sporting press have turned into gossip magazines the way they have reported the events surrounding my wedding."

Reyes: Arsenal forward Jose Antonio Reyes has been charged by the FA with violent conduct during Saturday's FA Cup fifth round tie against Sheffield United. Although Arsenal striker Dennis Bergkamp was sent off for pushing United's Danny Cullip in the 35th minute, television replays showed it may have been Reyes's hand that actually made contact with the United player.

In Italy: Serie B - Perugia vs Salernitana 0-1. Serie C - Grosseto vs Pro Patria 1-1.
