Ronaldo: Brazil striker Ronaldo has split up with fiancee Daniella Cicarelli less than three months after the couple threw a lavish engagement party at a secluded castle outside Paris. The couple threw the party, which cost an estimated €700,000, near Chantilly on February 14. Although it was billed as a wedding, Ronaldo could not marry 23-year-old Cicarelli because he had not been divorced for a full year from his first wife, Milene Domingues.

Ferguson Charged: Manchester United manager Alex Ferguson has been charged with improper conduct by the FA for his comments after last month's 2-1 win over Newcastle. Ferguson was incensed that referee Neale Barry did not award United a penalty in the April 24 Premier League match at Old Trafford when Andy O'Brien appeared to foul Alan Smith. He has until May 26 to respond to the charge.

Beckham: David Beckham is doubtful for Real Madrid's league match at Sevilla tomorrow because of a muscle strain in his left leg. The 30-year-old England captain, who has been in fine form for Real in recent games, has been unable to train fully for the last two days and will have a fitness test today.

Giro d'Italia: Italy's Danilo Di Luca won the fifth stage of the Giro d'Italia riding on familiar territory yesterday and took the race lead by three seconds. The Liquigas rider triumphed at the end of the uphill sprint in the centre of L'Aquila ahead of compatriot Marzio Bruseghin and Colombia's Mauricio Ardila. Thanks to the 20-second time bonus awarded to stage winners Di Luca now leads overall from compatriot Paolo Bettini.
