Atletico Madrid: Atletico Madrid players were threatened and insulted by a group of irate fans who broke down a fence and invaded the pitch during a team training session yesterday. Around 20 fans confronted the players who had been training at the club's headquarters in Majadahonda just outside Madrid. Players were escorted from the training ground by members of the Civil Guard at the end of the session to prevent any further incidents with the fans. Atletico looked to be on course for a Euro place midway through the season but have slipped to 11th place in the league over the last two months and were knocked out of the King's Cup by Osasuna in the semi-finals.

Home Ban: Corinthians have been given a three-match home ban in the Brazilian championship after their supporters ran onto the field to protest at the team's dismal display in a 5-1 derby defeat against Sao Paulo. Several fans managed to scale the fence and run onto the field during the second half of the game on May 8. One of them headed for Argentine coach Daniel Passarella before being stopped by security men. Passarella, who had been in charge for only 15 games, was fired two days later.

Figo: Real Madrid winger Luis Figo was included in the Portugal squad for next month's World Cup qualifiers against Slovakia and Estonia yesterday. Figo said he was taking an indefinite break from international football after Euro 2004 but reconsidered his decision last month when he was struggling to hold down a place in the starting line-up at his Spanish club. Figo's last appearance for Portugal was in the Euro 2004 final defeat to Greece.

Match-fixing role: A key suspect at the centre of Germany's match-fixing scandal has admitted his role in the affair. Ante S., the Croatian owner of a cafe in Berlin, is accused of organised fraud in connection with the fixing of German football matches. Berlin prosecutors said he had given 40 pages of testimony over five days in the course of the past week. Lawyer Stefan Conen, representing Ante S., said he had admitted to involvement in betting in part to point out that the role of his two brothers, who are also being held, had been massively exaggerated.

Ronaldo: Real Madrid striker Ronaldo has said he will be doing all he can to overhaul Barcelona's Samuel Eto'o as the Primera Liga's leading scorer in the final two games of the season. Ronaldo told a news conference: "It has been an odd season because I had a run of eight goals when I didn't score, but I'm four goals behind him and there are two games left so I'll be giving it all I can." Eto'o has scored 24 goals this season which puts him within a goal of Golden Shoe leader Thierry Henry who will have no further opportunities to add to his tally as the English league season is finished.

The Championship: Play-off SF 2nd leg - Derby vs Preston 0-0 (Preston win 2-0 on aggregate).
