Trezeguet: David Trezeguet says he wants to break former playmaker Michel Platini's goals record for France. Juventus striker Trezequet has netted 31 times in 59 international appearances while Platini hit 41 goals in 72 matches in the 1970s and 1980s. Trezeguet broke another Platini record last week when he took his tally of Juventus goals to 107. The former France coach and captain was on target 104 times for the Serie A side between 1982 and 1987. "I broke the record of Platini with my club and now I want to break his record with the national team," Trezeguet said.

Brazil: A sleepy former coal-mining town west of Dortmund has won the bidding to host holders Brazil during next year's World Cup in Germany, Bild newspaper reported yesterday. The daily said the Brazil team would stay at a luxury hotel in Castrop-Rauxel, a town with a population of 80,000.

Syomin: Yuri Syomin has been appointed coach of Dynamo Moscow on a three-year contract. Syomin, 58, announced his resignation as Russia coach on Tuesday after the team failed to qualify for the World Cup finals. He replaces Brazilian Ivo Wortman, who was sacked earlier this week after a string of poor results.

USA: Scotland coach Walter Smith expects the United States to become a major world soccer force within 10 years. Speaking before today's friendly against the Americans, Smith said: "They have a group of young players who look as though they could come into their team and keep on improving their team. I think everybody has to accept they will become a force in world football at some stage within the next 10 years or so."
