Belgain Cup: Standard Liege’s Ivan Santini headed the winner three minutes from time to clinch the Belgian Cup with a 2-1 final victory over holders Club Bruges yesterday. Standard’s victory helps make up for a disappointing campaign in which they finished outside the top six in the regular season standings and missed out on the post-season play-offs.
Howard: Everton goalkeeper Tim Howard will end his 10-year stay with the club to join MLS side Colorado Rapids at the end of the season. US international Howard, 37, whose 352 Premier League appearances is a club record for Everton, will join the Rapids on July 4. He has vowed to finish his career in England on a high. “I will miss it a lot,” Howard said. “This is home. I grew up here. To stay 10 years in any place is a long time and this has become without doubt my family.”
Ireland: Matt Doherty (Wolves) and Jonny Hayes (Aberdeen) remain in contention for Ireland debuts in the games against Switzerland and Slovakia. Brentford’s Alan Judge is also in line for a debut but uncapped Peterborough man Chris Forrester drops out after his inclusion in the 40-man squad. Ireland meet the Swiss on 25 March before facing Slovakia four days later. Both friendlies will be played in Dublin.
Bulls win: New York Red Bulls picked up their first win of the Major League Soccer season after two late goals from Felipe helped them to a 4-3 victory over Houston Dynamo. In other games, defending champions Portland drew 2-2 with Real Salt Lake while Columbus Crew could only manage a0-0 with Chicago Fire.
Derby draw: A last-gasp header by Billy McKay gave bottom side Dundee United a 2-2 Scottish Premiership draw against 10-man Dundee FC at Tannadice, yesterday. A Kane Hemmings double handed the visitors what looked like an unassailable lead but it all changed four minutes after the break when Dundee keeper Scott Bain was sent off for a last-man tackle on McKay. The United forward scored the penalty and eventually levelled in added-on time.
