Verebes: Former Hungary coach Jozsef Verebes has died at the age of 74. Verebes, nicknamed the Magician, had been suffering from a severe lung disease in the last few years. The former coach most famously guided Gyor for two periods between 1981-1986 and 1993-1994, winning league titles in 1982 and 1983 to make them the first club outside Budapest to successfully defend their crown in the top flight.
Neville: Valencia coach Gary Neville called his players’ performance “unacceptable” after they were beaten 1-0 in a local derby by struggling Levante, who sit bottom of La Liga. “That was an indefensible performance, unacceptable, not good enough,” Neville told a news conference. “I apologise to the fans of Valencia because the very basic premise of a football match is that you run, fight and tackle as hard as the opposition. I can’t defend what I’ve just seen and I have to take full responsibility for that.”
Donnarumma: Milan’s teenage goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma has been discharged from hospital after suffering a head injury in yesterday’s game at Chievo. The 17-year-old collided with team-mate Luca Antonelli after 19 minutes of a goalless draw at the Stadio Marc’Antonio Bentegodi and, after complaining of feeling dizzy, was replaced by Christian Abbiati, who is 21 years his senior.
Charlton: Charlton have issued a statement claiming to be “extremely saddened” by events at The Valley prior to and during their 2-0 Championship victory against Middlesbrough. Supporters held a mock funeral for the struggling London club ahead of yesterday’s game, with fans carrying a coffin to the ground. The game was also held up 30 seconds after kick-off when a large number of beach balls were thrown onto the pitch.
