Turan: Barcelona have asked the Spanish federation and FIFA to allow them to play Turkish midfielder Arda Turan due to Rafinha’s long-term knee injury. Turan was recruited in the close season from Atletico Madrid, as was Aleix Vidal of Sevilla, with the understanding the pair would not be available until January due to the transfer ban handed to Barca because they illegally signed under-age players. Rules stipulate that in emergency cases such as injury, players can be replaced outside the normal transfer windows.

Benteke: Striker Christian Benteke will miss Liverpool’s League Cup third-round tie against Carlisle at Anfield tonight with a hamstring injury. The Belgium international was withdrawn during Sunday’s draw with Norwich and was due to undergo an MRI scan to determine the extent of the problem.

Chelsea: John Terry and Radamel Falcao will return for League Cup holders Chelsea at Walsall today. Captain Terry appeared in every Premier League game last season but was left out of the 2-0 win over Arsenal. Falcao has yet to start for the Londoners

Kalu: Nigerian businessman Orji Uzor Kalu has become the latest person to consider making a bid for the presidency of soccer‘s global governing body FIFA as it struggles to emerge from a corruption scandal. Kalu, a businessman with oil, tourism and other interests in West Africa and former governor of Abia state, is “carefully deliberating upon the decision” to stand as a successor to outgoing president Sepp Blatter, his Washington-based spokesman Sam Amsterdam said in a statement.

Taylor: Newcastle United’s problems worsened yesterday when defender Steven Taylor was ruled out for eight weeks and striker Papiss Cisse sidelined for the League Cup tie at home to second tier Sheffield Wednesday. “(Taylor) had a scan on his hamstring,” manager Steve McClaren told a news conference. “He’s had a small operation to repair the damage and unfortunately it looks like he’ll be out for a couple of months.”
