Shearer: Alan Shearer feared yesterday that his career might have ended three matches early after he came off with a knee injury during Newcastle's 4-1 win at Sunderland. "It doesn't look good. They think there might be a tear in the medial ligament," said the 35-year-old former England captain, who is due to retire at the end of the season. "And if that is the case then that'll be it for me I'm afraid," he was quoted as saying by the BBC.

King: Tottenham Hotspur captain Ledley King is likely to be out of action for up to a month after injuring his foot in Saturday's 1-0 win at Everton. The England international sustained a stress fracture to the fourth metatarsal on his left foot and early indications are that his recovery would take three to four weeks. If the club's prognosis is correct, King should still be fit for the World Cup in Germany which starts on June 9.

Swiss Cup: Swiss second division side FC Sion have secured a shock place in next season's UEFA Cup competition after beating Young Boys Bern in yesterday's Swiss Cup final. Sion's 5-3 victory on penalties marked the first time in the cup's 81-year history that a lower division side has lifted the trophy. Sion maintained their perfect record in cup finals - having won nine previous finals while playing in the top division.

Boston Marathon: Kenyan Robert Kipkoech Cheruiyot won his second Boston Marathon yesterday in an unofficial course record time after overtaking fellow Kenyan Benjamin Maiyo and American Meb Keflezighi. Cheruiyot finished in two hours, seven minutes and 14 seconds. The previous course record of 2:07:15 was set by Cosmas Ndeti of Kenya in 1994. The women's marathon was won by Kenyan Rita Jeptoo who overtook last year's New York City Marathon winner Jelena Prokopcuka of Latvia and Reiko Tosa of Japan. Jeptoo, 25, won the 110th edition of the world's oldest annually contested marathon in 2 hours 23 minutes 38 seconds.
