Dario Silva: Former Uruguay striker Dario Silva has had his lower right leg amputated following a car crash, his mother said yesterday. Silva suffered an exposed fracture of the leg after the accident on Montevideo's main seafront avenue on Sunday, when his pick-up truck collided with a lamp-post. Silva is in an induced coma in the intensive care unit of a private hospital in Montevideo. Silva played for English premier league club Portsmouth last year and was out of contract.

Rui Costa: Benfica playmaker Rui Costa will miss today's Champions League Group F clash with Manchester United after failing to recover from a thigh injury. The 34-year-old international, who also missed his side's draw against FC Copenhagen, suffered the right thigh injury during a Premier League match against Boavista two weeks ago. Rui Costa returned this season to the club that launched his career after 12 years in Italy.

Celtic: Celtic have an injury doubt over striker Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink ahead of their Champions League Group F clash with FC Copenhagen today. The Dutchman suffered an ankle knock late in their 2-0 Saturday win over Glasgow rivals Rangers and is struggling to be fully fit. Celtic lost their opening group match 3-2 at Manchester United.

Angelov: Levski Sofia striker Emil Angelov will miss the Champions League Group A match against Chelsea tomorrow because of a thigh injury. He initially picked up the injury during Levski's 5-0 demolition by champions Barcelona on the first day of the Champions League two weeks ago. The 26-year-old Angelov, who scored twice in the four qualifying round matches Levski played, aggravated the injury during his team's 1-0 win over city rivals CSKA five days later.

Mahdavikia: Hamburg SV's Iranian defender Mehdi Mahdavikia will be banned for three matches and fined 5,000 euros ($6,387) for his foul on Werder Bremen's Diego, the German FA said yesterday. Mahdavikia was sent off in the 73rd minute of Saturday's 1-1 draw for an ugly and late challenge on the Brazilian.

Sanchez: Former Mexico and Real Madrid striker Hugo Sanchez has been named as the new coach of first division club Necaxa, ending 11 months out of the game. The Aguascalientes club also announced that former Ecuador captain Alex Aguinaga would take over as their sporting director. The outspoken Sanchez, who resigned as coach of UNAM after four years in charge last October, replaces Enrique Zarza Lopez, who was sacked hours before Necaxa's match away to UNAM on Sunday.
