Roma: Roma is due to be sold to US investors in 30 days, the club’s current owners Italpetroli announced. A consortium led by the Italo-American Thomas DiBenedetto, owner of the Boston Red Sox , will purchase the Serie A side for €200 million, according to Italian press.

Ronaldo: Ronaldo, Brazil’s legendary footballer who retired this week, was yesterday appointed to help coordinate Brazil’s hosting of the 2014 World Cup. Sao Paulo governor Geraldo Alckmin named the ex-player to his state committee coordinating the football tournament in a ceremony in a Sao Paulo stadium. He also awarded Ronaldo, 34, a medal in honour of his sporting achievements and legacy.

Jones: Blackburn defender Phil Jones signed a new contract with the Premier League club. Jones, who can play in defence or midfield, follows captain Chris Samba, Michel Salgado, Jason Roberts and Mark Bunn in agreeing new contracts in the last month. The England U-21 international, currently sidelined with a knee injury, has added another 12 months on to his current deal, which now takes him up to the summer of 2016.

Dikgacoi: South Africa midfielder Kagisho Dikgacoi has joined Crystal Palace on loan from Fulham until the end of the season. Dikgacoi was a member of South Africa’s 2010 World Cup squad but he has struggled for playing time since signing for Fulham in August 2009.

Formula One: Lotus Renault have signed veteran driver Nick Heidfeld to replace the injured Robert Kubica. Kubica could miss the entire season after suffering serious injuries in a rally crash. However, Renault have acted swiftly to line up a replacement for the stricken Polish driver, signing Heidfeld after he impressed in testing this week. Heidfeld, a former team-mate of Kubica’s at BMW Sauber between 2006-2009, has started 172 races.

Tennis: Caroline Wozniacki moved to within two wins of regaining the no.1 spot from Kim Clijsters but only reached the last 16 of the Dubai Open after her opponent, Anna Chakvetadze, suddenly fainted. A doctor, a trainer, the umpire and Wozniacki all rushed to help Chak-vetadze, and after a seven-minute delay in which her blood pressure was checked, she played one more point before retiring with the score at 6-1, 3-5 and 40-15.

Alpine Skiing: France won gold in the team event at the world ski championships yesterday with Austria taking silver and Sweden claiming bronze. France won the final by virtue of the fastest overall time from their four racers after finishing 2-2 against Austria, while Sweden took the bronze after they demolished Italy 4-0 in the third-place play-off.
