Cologne get Daum: Cologne have appointed Christoph Daum, who has not worked in Germany since a drugs scandal in 2000, as their new coach. The German second division club said yesterday that Daum had signed until the end of June 2010. "We hope that with this decision we have found the best solution for FC Cologne and for the team," team manager Michael Meier said. Daum was offered the Cologne post earlier this month after the club sacked Hanspeter Latour, but he initially turned it down as he needed time to recover from a throat operation.

Slow ball boys: Scotland have been reprimanded by UEFA over the speed of their ball boys when they beat France 1-0 in their European Championship qualifier last month. Scottish FA chief executive David Taylor said the sanction was "the most bizarre thing" he had encountered during his tenure, but promised to speed up the ball boys' response. France coach Raymond Domenech complained about the slow return of the ball after their Group B defeat at Hampden on October 7 and said it had disrupted their pattern of play.

Hearts: Hearts fans demanded Lithuanian owner Vladimir Romanov quit at their 1-0 home defeat to Rangers in the Scottish Premier League yesterday. Supporters held up banners at the stadium backing deposed captain Steven Pressley and calling for Romanov to go. The majority shareholder was absent from the match. A couple of hundred fans then chanted "sack the board" outside their Tynecastle ground after the final whistle. Pressley was dropped for last Monday's league match at Falkirk after he criticised how the club was being run.

Edu injured: Valencia's Brazilian midfielder Edu will miss most of the rest of the season after damaging knee ligaments, the Primera Liga club said yesterday. The 28-year-old international suffered the injury during the 3-0 defeat away to Sevilla in the Primera Liga on Saturday. The former Arsenal player was out for seven months last season after tearing the cruciate ligament in his left knee. Striker David Villa also had to leave the pitch on Saturday with an ankle injury but is expected to be fit for Wednesday's Champions League match against Olympiakos.

Sao Paulo champions: Sao Paulo won the Brazilian championship for the fourth time with two games to spare last night when they drew 1-1 at home to Atletico Paranaense. Sao Paulo moved eight points clear of second-placed Internacional, whose chances ended when they lost 1-0 at Parana in a match which was interrupted for 13 minutes in the first half because of torrential rain.
