Jelen: Auxerre’s Polish striker Ireneusz Jelen will today undergo a knee operation in Poland by the same surgeon who operated on him in June, Auxerre coach Jean Fernandez revealed yesterday. “Jelen has a swollen knee and he’ll have an operation on Monday,” he said.

Schweinsteiger: Bastian Schweinsteiger has accused Nuremberg’s Javier Pinola of spitting at him during Bayern Munich’s 3-0 victory yesterday. “I’ve never had that in my career. It’s an action that shows a lack of respect... He will have to be punished,” he said.

Rugby Union: Argentina lock Manuel Carizza was ruled out for the rest of the Pumas European tour yesterday after it was confirmed he suffered a fractured arm in the the 22-16 victory over Italy. The Biarritz player fractured his right arm early in the second half of Saturday’s encounter and was replaced by Esteban Lozada in the 48th minute. Argentina officials said he faces an operation but did not confirm whether he would be replaced.

Weightlifting: China’s Li Ping yesterday set a new world record for the snatch and aggregate in the women’s – 53kg weightlifting class on home soil at the Asian Games. Li lifted 103kg in the snatch to beat the previous best of 102kg set by Ri Song-Hui of North Korea at the 2002 Busan Asian Games. The 22-year-old’s best clean and jerk of 127kg was enough to see her rack up a combined total of 230kg to break the previous aggregate best of 226kg set by compatriot Qiu Hongxia in October 2006.

Golf: Australian golfing legend Greg Norman has tied the knot with his third wife, interior designer Kirsten Kutner, at a secret ceremony in the Caribbean, reports said yesterday. Norman, 55, said the barefoot beach ceremony was on a private island with a small gathering of family and friends, in an interview with New Idea magazine widely previewed by the Australian press yesterday. “To me she is the most beautiful woman in the world,” Norman said of his new wife, 14 years his junior. “She looked stunning.”

Volleyball: Russia’s Ekaterina Gamova received the Most Valuable Player’s award after leading her side to its second consecutive victory at the world women’s volleyball championship yesterday. The Russians, also five-time champions as the former Soviet Union, prevailed with a 21-25, 25-17, 20-25, 25-14, 15-11 victory over Brazil in the final. Gamova scored 35 points to dominate the final.

Basketball: Phoenix Suns point guard Steve Nash said that he and his wife, Alejandra, who gave birth to their son last week, are in the process of a divorce. Nash said in a statement to Life and Style Magazine that he and his wife have lived separately for several months but remain committed to bringing up their children 'in the most positive, nurturing way possible”. The Suns announced Matteo Nash's birth in a news release on Friday.
