Mexes: Primera Liga club Sevilla are reportedly interested in signing Philippe Mexes from Roma in January. The defender’s contract is due to expire next summer. Milan are also interested in Mexes but Sevilla seems to be a more likely destination given they are still looking to replace Sebastian Squillaci who left for Arsenal.

Rangers: Rangers have announced a £3.7m reduction in bank debt and a total debt of £27.1m following their Premier League win and subsequent participation in the Champions League, in financial results published yesterday. Rangers announced their bank debt fell from £26.1m to £22.3m in the year ending June 30, 2010.

Bramble: Sunderland defender Titus Bramble was arrested on suspicion of rape yesterday. The 29-year-old was detained after the alleged rape of a young woman was reported to police in the early hours of the morning. Bramble, a former England U-21 player, was being quizzed by detectives investigating the alleged attack at a Newcastle city centre hotel.

Tomasson: Feyenoord coach Mario Been fears he could be without injured striker Jon Dahl Tomasson for the rest of the year. The 34-year-old has not featured for the Rotterdam club so far this season after suffering a thigh injury three months ago while playing for Denmark at the World Cup. Been said: “I have long hoped to have him back quickly, but the messages I get now are far from optimistic.”

Boruc: Artur Boruc, the Fiorentina keeper, could be on his way out of the Serie A to join Legia Warsaw in the Polish league. Boruc, 30, joined Fiorentina in summer after leaving Celtic. However, he has been unable to wrest the no.1 jersey away from Sebastien Frey and is already growing restless in Tuscany.

Moore: A Dubai prosecutor said that former Australia captain Craig Moore, reportedly involved in a drunken altercation over a taxi fare, will only be charged on a misdemeanor drinking offence. After Moore was questioned, Sami Salem al-Shami said it was decided to turn the case over to a court dealing with misdemeanors.

Cricket: Australian fast bowler Brett Lee is poised to play domestic Twenty20 cricket in New Zealand as he seeks a career swansong at next year’s World Cup. Lee retired from Test cricket earlier this year after a string of injuries but is desperate to cap his international career by appearing for Australia at the showpiece in February, Wellington’s Dominion Post newspaper reported.

American football: New York Giants running back Brandon Jacobs has been slapped with a 10,000-dollar fine for tossing his helmet into the stands against the Indianapolis Colts. The incident took place during the Giants’ 38-14 loss on Sunday when a frustrated Jacobs took off his helmet on the sidelines and flung it into the stands. A fan who caught the helmet initially refused to give it back but it was eventually wrestled from the fan and returned to Jacobs.

Badminton: Athens Olympic gold medallist Taufik Hidayat became the biggest casualty yesterday when he crashed in an unexpected loss to Japan’s Sho Sasaki in the Japan Open badminton tournament. The Indonesian, who reached the final at the World Championships, failed to take the last two points in the last two games before going down 18-21, 23-21, 21-19 in the men’s singles first round.

Baseball: Chicago Cubs fielder Tyler Colvin was still recovering in hospital yesterday after having his chest punctured by a broken bat in a Major League Baseball game on Sunday. The season-ending injury took place in the second inning of a 13-3 win over the Florida Marlins. Colvin was leaving third base when he was struck by a small piece of team-mate Welington Castillo’s broken bat. Castillo doubled on the play and Colvin scored.
