Zanetti: Inter captain Javier Zanetti is in hospital under observation after suffering chest pains. The veteran walked towards the locker room after the 2-1 win in Palermo when he started to feel unwell. “Zanetti had chest pains down the right side. He was calm, but the medical staff decided to take him in to hospital as a precaution,” Inter coach Rafael Benitez said.

Moore: Former Australian national football team captain Craig Moore’s altercation with Dubai police that led to his arrest began over a 13 dollar taxi fare. Moore drunkenly argued with the cab driver over a 50 dirham ($13.6) fare and police were called to intervene, The National newspaper cited Dubai police as saying. “He then shoved one of the officers,” the newspaper said.

Lierse: Aime Anthuenis has been sacked as coach of Lierse following their 2-0 defeat against Westerlo in the Belgian first division. Lierse were promoted to the Belgian top flight at the end of last season but are currently joint-bottom of the standings with just one point taken from a possible 21.

Donovan: Landon Donovan scored twice late in the second half to give Los Angeles Galaxy a 2-1 win over DC United on Saturday. David Beckham made his second appearance of the season for the Galaxy, entering in the 53rd minute. Allardyce: Blackburn boss Sam Allardyce will make his displeasure at match official Anthony Taylor known to Premier League referees chiefs after his side were held at home by Fulham. Athletics: Haile Gebrselassie added another title to his never-ending list of accolades with a commanding victory in the Great North Run, yesterday. The 37-year-old Ethiopian, who was competing in the half-marathon event for the first time, broke away at the halfway point to claim victory well ahead of Kenya’s Kiplimo Kimutai. In the women’s race, Mara Yamauchi’s bid to become the first British winner since Paula Radcliffe in 2003, ended in disappointment as she could only finish fifth behind another Ethiopian, Berhane Adere.

Rugby Union: Jonny Wilkinson was hailed as a “great” and back to the form that saw him win the 2003 World Cup with England after another dominant Top 14 display for his French club Toulon. Wilkinson has been in fantastic form for the Mediterranean city, racking up a further 23 points in Saturday’s 28-16 win over defending champions Clermont.

Cycling: Italian Vincenzo Nibali, of Liquigas, claimed overall victory in the Tour of Spain yesterday after a 21st and final stage won by American sprinter Tyler Farrar. Nibali, a 25-year-old all-rounder from Sicily, becomes the first Italian since Marco Giovannetti in 1990 to win the three-week race.

Tennis: Australia’s Jarmila Groth claimed her first WTA title with an easy 6-1, 6-4 victory over Russia’s Alla Kudryavtseva at the Guangzhou Open in China. The 23-year-old Groth powered 11 aces past Kudryavtseva to notch the win and take home the 37,000-dollar winner’s cheque.

Auto Racing: Helio Castroneves took the lead on the 118th lap and held on to win the Indy Japan 300 at the Twin Ring Motegi to ensure the championship goes down to the wire. The Team Penske driver roared home ahead of Dario Franchitti to claim his second consecutive victory. Championship leader Will Power came in third, allowing Franchitti to close the gap in the overall standings to 12 points ahead of the season finale at in Miami on October 2.
