Rioting: More than 200 German hooligans have been arrested after clashing with police during rioting in Brussels in the wake of Germany’s 1-0 win over Belgium. In total, 209 arrests were made throughout the course of Friday night and the main area of trouble was in downtown Brussels where fans without tickets clashed with police before and during the game.

Van der Vaart: New Tottenham signing Rafael van der Vaart has revealed he did not leave Real Madrid a year ago because his wife had developed breast cancer. Holland midfielder Van der Vaart was set to be sold by the Spanish giants last summer but he refused to move on while model wife Sylvie was undergoing what proved to be successful treatment.

Padalino: Switzerland coach Ottmar Hitzfeld called up Sampdoria midfielder Marco Padalino as a late replacement in his squad for the Euro 2012 qualifier against England. Padalino will cover for Bayer Leverkusen’s Tranquillo Barnetta, who has come down with flu and is uncertain for Switzerland’s crunch first qualifier in Basel on Tuesday, the Swiss football federation said.

Brescia: Veteran Antonio Filippini is back at Brescia after a six-year absence. The 37-year-old midfielder is out of contract following his spell at Livorno. He played for Brescia between 1995 and 2004 and made 266 appearances for the club between Serie A and B.

Jansen: Germany will be without defender Marcell Jansen for Tuesday’s Euro 2012 qualifier against Azerbaijan after the left-back injured a knee in the 1-0 win over Belgium. Jansen came off at half-time in Germany’s win in Brussels and he will have a scan to assess the injury tomorrow.

Cricket: India’s batting great Sachin Tendulkar was awarded the honorary rank of group captain by the chief of the Indian Air Force (IAF) for his contribution to cricket. Tendulkar, 37, was conferred the honour by Air Chief Marshal Pradeep Naik. Tendulkar, who made his international debut in 1989, is the leading run-getter in both Test and one-day cricket. He has scored 13,837 runs from 169 Tests and 17,598 runs in 442 one-day matches.

Formula One: Hispania Racing boss Colin Kolles said Sakon Yamamoto will continue to drive for the Spanish marque. Yamamoto initially replaced Bruno Senna for the British GP, but for the last three races, Karun Chandhok has been forced to give way to the Japanese. Kolles’s decision comes despite the fact that in three of his four races in which he has managed to take the chequered flag, Yamamoto has been last of those who finished.

Boxing: Searchers using dog teams and helicopters continued to look for John Arum, son of Hall of Fame boxing promoter Bob Arum, almost a week after he went missing in North Cascades National Park. The 49-year-old John Arum, an environmental lawyer and experienced climber, failed to return from a weekend trip to climb Storm King mountain northeast of Seattle.

Snowboarding: A teen member of the Russian junior national snowboard team has died in a training accident, Swiss police said yesterday. The unnamed 14-year-old was training in a snowboard park in the southern resort of Saas-Fee on Friday when she crashed heavily, landing on her head. She was taken by helicopter to hospital in the nearby town of Viege, but was later declared dead.

Badminton: Former women’s singles world No.1 Zhou Mi, of Hong Kong, has been suspended for two years after she failed a drug test. Zhou Mi acknowledged that she had taken over-the-counter medication but was unaware that it contained a prohibited substance. The ban begins on August 4.

Athletics: Former Olympic and world 100m champion Justin Gatlin notched up another victory on the comeback trail late on Friday, clocking 10.15sec at a meeting in Padova. The American, who served a four-year doping suspension, has been appearing in a series of low-key meets as he tries to rebuild his shattered career.
