Malta U-19: Malta’s U-19 team atoned for their 2-0 defeat to Scotland in a friendly on Monday by beating the hosts 2-1 in their second encounter in Glasgow yesterday. The Maltese youngsters, under the guidance of newly-appointed coach Michael Molzahn, won thanks to goals from Matthew Tabone and Bjorn Kristensen.

West Brom: West Brom boss Roberto Di Matteo has confirmed the club have agreed terms with Lokomotiv Moscow forward Peter Odemwingie. The 29-year-old, who has dual Nigerian and Russian citizenship, is expected to complete the move imminently and could even be available to face Sunderland on Saturday.

Amauri: Juventus’s Brazilian-born Italy striker Amauri has been charged with insulting a policeman following an incident near Turin. The 30-year-old was charged following an altercation with the Carabinieri in Moncalieri, 8km south of Turin, after a night out in the town.

Acquafresca: Robert Acquafresca has returned to Cagliari on loan from Genoa just a year after ending a previous loan spell there, the Sardinian club said. The 22-year-old spent two seasons with Cagliari, the first in co-ownership with Inter and the second on loan from the Italian champions, before being transferred to Genoa in the deal that took Diego Milito and Thiago Motta to Inter.

Cameroon: Former Spain coach Javier Clemente has been named as Cameroon coach working alongside former international stars Omam Biyick and Jacques Songo’o as his assistants. Clemente will arrive in the country on August 28 to sign his contract.

Fulham: Belgium forward Moussa Dembele yesterday joined Fulham from Dutch side AZ Alkmaar for a fee of €6.5 million. The creative 23-year-old, has signed a three-year contract and becomes new Fulham coach Mark Hughes’s first signing.

Gobbi: Parma yesterday signed former Italy midfielder Massimo Gobbi on a free transfer, the club said. The 29-year-old, spent the last four seasons with Fiorentina following two years at Cagliari.

Pato: Milan’s Brazil forward Pato will miss Sunday’s Berlusconi Cup against Juventus due to an ankle injury picked up in training on Tuesday, his club said yesterday. Pato, who suffered several injuries last season which disrupted his campaign, needs five days of rest according to the club doctor.

Diving: Britain’s world champion diver Tom Daley is optimistic that he will recover from a triceps injury and compete at the Youth Olympics. The 16-year-old pulled out of the European championships at the weekend but travelled to Singapore regardless. He is due to compete in the 3m springboard competition and then the 10m platform. “Obviously I’ll be gutted if I can’t compete,” he said. “It’s the first Youth Olympics and I’m really excited to be a part of it.”

Tennis: Czech qualifier Iveta Benesova stunned Serbian top seed Jelena Jankovic 7-6 (7/3), 6-3 to reach the third round of the WTA Montreal Cup. The 27-year-old left-hander, who is ranked 75th in the world, began the year 2-9 before winning her second career WTA singles crown in May at Morocco. Also reaching the third round was Russian eighth seed Vera Zvonareva, who ousted Kazakhstan’s Yaroslava Shvedova 6-2, 6-1.

Motor racing: IndyCar racers will compete in two races in one day for the first time in 30 years next season at the Twin 275s at Texas Motor Speedway. The Texas Two-Step, named for a famous dan­ce of a generation past, will feature two races at 275km or 114 laps of the oval track, replacing the 550km event staged there in past seasons. The races will be staged on June 11, 2011, as the first IndyCar events after next year’s Indianapolis 500.
