Scotland: Craig Levein has resurrected his bid to select Andrew Driver for Scotland. It had been assumed that the Hearts' winger was eligible for selection under the five-year 'school rule' agreed by the home nations last year but Driver fell two months short of having been educated in the country for five years. Levein is now hoping to get the rules relaxed further.

Modric: Croatia midfielder Luka Modric confirmed yesterday he has signed a new six-year contract to keep him at Tottenham until 2016. The 24-year-old, who joined Spurs from Dinamo Zagreb in summer 2008, had been linked with a move to Manchester United. But yesterday he committed his long-term future to Tottenham, insisting he had "no interest in going anywhere else".

Catania: Marco Giampaolo was yesterday announced as the new coach of Sicilian Serie A side Catania, replacing Sinisa Mihajlovic who resigned last week. Giampaolo, who previously had two short stints as Cagliari coach, led Siena to safety in 2008/09 but was fired at the beginning of last season after a poor start.

English Fa: The Football Association have confirmed Adrian Bevington will take up his new role as Club England managing director with immediate effect. With his vast experience of FA affairs , Bevington will help bring some stability to the FA at a time of huge turmoil following the exit of chairman Lord Triesman.

Rugby Union: Aaron Cruden completed a fairytale recovery from cancer when he was included among four new caps in a revamped All Blacks side named yesterday for Tests next month against Ireland and Wales. A raft of injuries among seasoned All Blacks forced the selectors to cast their net wide when cobbling together a 26-man squad that includes three players still on the injured list. The inclusion of the 21-year-old fly-half Cruden was the biggest surprise among the newcomers who also include flanker Victor Vito, inside-centre Benson Stanley and full-back Israel Dagg.

MotoGP: The Australian MotoGP will be held in the southern state of Victoria until at least 2016, officials said yesterday, ending suggestions that Sydney could poach the event. The Victorian state government said it also had options to extend the contract for the event at Phillip Island until 2026.

Basketball, NBA: Kobe Bryant carried his Laker team-mates on his back as Los Angeles closed out Phoenix with a 111-103 win in game six to set up a rematch with the Boston Celtics. Bryant fired a game high 37 points and Ron Artest added 25 and the Lakers held off a late Suns' rally to win the National Basketball Association semi-final series 4-2. The Lakers and Celtics will meet in the finals for the 11th time with game one on Thursday.

Baseball: Philadelphia pitcher Roy Halladay threw the 20th perfect game in American baseball history, by striking out 11 batters as the Phillies edged the Florida Marlins 1-0. It was the second perfect game in Major League Baseball in May and the first time in history there were two perfect games in the same season. Earlier this month Dallas Braden pitched a perfect game for Oakland against Tampa Bay.
