Van Bronckhorst: Dutch defender Giovanni van Bronckhorst announced that he will retire after the World Cup. The 35-year-old, who has scored five goals in winning 97 caps for his country, has played for Waalwijk, Feyenoord, Glasgow Rangers, Arsenal and Barcelona.

Deschamps: Didier Deschamps, coach of French champions Marseille, revealed he might be about to prolong his contract at the club. "It's possible, as I want to commit myself in the medium term," he told reporters. "It's a possibility, even though I've still a year to run on my contract. We'll see, we'll talk."

Podolski: Germany striker Lukas Podolski is being investigated for suspicion of assault and dangerous driving. German sports agency SID, said the 24-year-old Cologne forward is said to have narrowly avoided hitting an elderly couple crossing the street while driving and then insulted the pair in an exchange of words.

Neuville: Former Germany international Oliver Neuville has announced his retirement. The 37-year-old striker, who made 69 appearances for his country, brought the curtain down on an almost two-decade long career that has included two World Cup finals. Neuville spent the past six years at B. Monchengladbach.

Cycling: American Sarah Hammer clocked what's expected to be verified as a world record in the 3,000m individual pursuit at the Pan American Cycling Championships in Mexico. Hammer finished in 3min, 22.269sec, more than two seconds faster than the mark set by New Zealand's Sarah Ulmer at the 2004 Olympics. Hammer's blistering time came in the qualifying round at Aguascalientes. She went on to win the gold medal final.

Basket, NBA: Boston Celtics shocked Cleveland Cavaliers 120-88 to put the NBA's best regular-season team and superstar LeBron James on the brink of post-season elimination. Ray Allen scored 25 points as Boston, once thought too old to challenge for another title, routed NBA Most Valuable Player James and his Cavs on their home floor. The Celtics took a 3-2 led in the best-of-seven series, and can knock out Cleveland and reach the Eastern Conference finals with a victory in game six in Boston tonight.

Athletics: Athletics coach Trevor Graham, banned for life by the US Anti-Doping Agency, is suing USADA for $30m saying it slandered him. Graham filed the federal lawsuit in the eastern district of North Carolina. USADA handed Graham a lifetime coaching ban in July 2008 for his role in helping athletes acquire performance-enhancing drugs, something he has denied. Graham, who is representing himself in the lawsuit, once coached now-disgraced sprint stars Marion Jones, Justin Gatlin and Tim Montgomery.

Dakar Rally: The Chilean office in charge of archaeological and historical sites said it wants $570,000 in compensation for damages incurred by participants in the 2010 Dakar rally in January. The National Monuments Council said that rally participants caused damage to 56 of the 111 heritage sites the route went through, and 13 of the sites, mostly in the Quillaga region northeast of Antofagasta, reported a serious loss of archaeological data.
