Lehmann: Flamboyant goalkeeper Jens Lehmann ended his 22-year career yesterday as he played his final Bundesliga match for Stuttgart in a 1-1 draw with Hoffenheim. The 40-year-old ex-Arsenal shot-stopper has hung up his gloves and will be a TV pundit for next month's World Cup. This was his 394th German league game and he also played for Schalke, Milan and Borussia Dortmund.

Sneijder: Inter midfielder Wesley Sneijder will be out of Inter's match with Chievo this afternoon. Sneijder, along with defenders Lucio and Ivan Cordoba, limped off during Wednesday's Coppa Italia final victory over Roma. There were hopes the Dutchman could recover from his thigh problem in time for this game, but he failed to make it in time.

Houghton: English coach Bob Houghton will remain in charge of India for next year's Asian Cup finals in Qatar. The 62-year-old former China and Uzbekistan coach is reported to have sent his resignation to the All India Football Federation last week after being unhappy over the delay of a contract extension beyond January's Asian Cup.

Mexico: Mexico played to a scoreless draw with Ecuador in a World Cup tune-up for the Aztecas on Friday, the first pro sports event at the New Meadowlands Stadium. A festive atmosphere at the brand new venue, which will be home to the NFL's New York Giants and Jets, didn't translate onto the pitch, where the play was sloppy.

Obama: The World Cup's toughest security headache may be a surprise visit by President Barack Obama. "One challenge is the American President who is coming, not coming, coming...," national police commissioner Bheki Cele said. "Our famous prayer is that they don't make the second round because we are told that if they go to the second or third stage, Obama might come."

Togo: The president of the Confederation of African Football agreed to ask his organisation's executive committee to overturn Togo's ban from the next two Africa Cup of Nations. Togo were punished by CAF for government interference after they pulled out of this year's tournament in Angola in the aftermath of an attack on their team bus that injured players and left two people dead.

Ice Hockey: A sudden-death winner by Felix Schutz gave hosts Germany a shock 2-1 win over the US in the world championship's opening match on Friday. Organisers relocated the game to the Veltins-Arena in Gelsenkirchen. The 76,152-seat arena was sold out to set a world record attendance for an ice hockey match, breaking the previous best of 74,554, set in the US at a 2001 game between Michigan State University and the University of Michigan.

Golf: Tiger Woods made the halfway cut at the Players Championship but will start the third round nine strokes off the lead held by England's Lee Westwood. Woods made sure he would be working the weekend when he carded a respectable one-under 71 in the second round at the Sawgrass TPC. Speculation was rife pre-tournament that Woods would miss two successive cuts for the first time in his career, but he quite easily survived.

Baseball: Jamie Moyer, 47, became the oldest player in Major League Baseball history to throw a shutout as he tossed a two-hitter to lead Philadelphia to a 7-0 victory over Atlanta. Moyer struck out five and faced one batter over the minimum to earn his 262nd career victory. The previous oldest pitcher to throw a complete-game shutout was Phil Niekro, who was 46 years, 188 days old with the Yankees when he shut out the Blue Jays in 1985.

Basket, NBA: Unheralded Goran Dragic scored 23 of his 26 points in the fourth quarter as Phoenix beat San Antonio 110-96 to take a commanding 3-0 lead in their NBA Western Conference play-off series. The Suns, who have fallen to the Spurs in the post-season four straight times since 2003, are now perfectly poised for revenge.

Cycling: Five British women cyclists, being groomed for the 2012 Olympics, have been injured in a collision with a car while training in Belgium. Hannah Mayho, Lucy Martin, Katie Colclough, Emma Trott and Sarah Reynolds were involved in the accident which happened between the towns of Brakel and Oudenaarde on Friday. Mayho, who came into direct contact with the vehicle, broke both her legs, her right arm and wrist.
