Hernandez: Manchester United have agreed to sign prolific Mexican striker Javier Hernandez, 21, from Guadalajara for an undisclosed fee. United said personal terms had been agreed and Hernandez, who is likely to be an important player for Mexico at the World Cup finals in South Africa, had passed a medical in Manchester this week.

Chamakh: Bordeaux's Moroccan international Marouane Chamakh confirmed he is set to quit the French first division side at the end of the season. "It's practically sure," said Chamakh, 26. "I've just five weeks left here. It's up to me to have nine great matches to go as far as possible with Bordeaux." Chamakh has been strongly linked with a move to Arsenal.

Ribery: Bayern Munich bosses have given Franck Ribery a pen for his 27th birthday which they hope he will use to sign a new contract. After Bayern reached the Champions League semi-finals on Wednesday night, club bosses used the traditional after match banquet to celebrate Ribery's birthday. "It's a pen," chief executive Karl-Heinz Rummenigge said. "We hope he's going to use it to sign his new contract."

Bonucci: Leonardo Bonucci has attracted the interest of the two Manchester clubs but the Bari defender is likely to stay in Italy. "There is a lot of interest for Bonucci in England," agent Davide Torchia said. "But, I would like Leonardo to stay in Italy. This way he would be able to continue his work and remain in the spotlight for the Azzurri." Bonucci has also been linked with Juventus, Inter and Milan.

Diouf: Blackburn striker El-Hadji Diouf will appear in court next month charged with driving offences. The 29-year-old was summoned over allegations that he drove without a licence or insurance when stopped by police in Manchester last September. Diouf was stopped in a white Porsche Cayenne in Altrincham Road on September 14.

Rangers: Rangers announced they had frozen season-ticket prices for the second successive year. The Ibrox club claim they have again taken account of the fragile economic climate to ensure a third straight season of the same prices. Season-ticket holders will also be given free access to Rangers' internet television channel, RangersTV.tv, for the first three months of next term.

Sir John: Former Newcastle owner Sir John Hall has confirmed that he has been diagnosed with incurable prostate cancer. The 77-year-old is best remembered by Toon fans for overseeing Kevin Keegan's reign as manager, when the likes of David Ginola, Alan Shearer and Les Ferdinand helped the club challenge for the league title.

Ridgewell: Liam Ridgewell has stressed his desire to remain with Birmingham and sign a new contract. The defender, who has effectively switched from centre-back to left-back this season, was reported to have put in a transfer request. Ridgewell said: "I don't want to leave Birmingham, of course not. We've had a good season, we're doing well and I'm enjoying it here."

Honduras: Honduras's national congress donated $52,700 to the Central American country's team for their World Cup preparations. Honduras, under Colombian coach Reinaldo Rueda, qualified for the finals for the second time this year, having played at the 1982 World Cup in Spain. The donation was made two weeks after squad members called on the congress to pay them their bonuses for qualification to the finals in South Africa.

Olympics: The Canadian Olympic Committee's chief executive will step down after saying the country's success in the Winter Games made it a good time to go. Chris Rudge spent seven years in the post as the country prepared to host the 2010 Olympics with its "Own the Podium" campaign designed to ensure Canadian athletes made a good showing. Rudge found himself defending the programme when Canadian athletes stumbled early in Vancouver but they went on to win 14 gold medals, a record for a host country in a Winter Olympics.

Tennis: Defending champion Caroline Wozniacki beat Sofia Arvidsson 6-3 6-1 to reach the quarter-finals of the 220,000-dollar WTA MPS Group Championships in Florida. Wozniacki only lost seven points on her serve in the first set. They traded service breaks to start the second set but Wozniacki broke again to take a 2-1 lead and then seized control over the Swede.

Rugby Union: Former All Black Leon MacDonald said he was retiring from rugby after receiving one head knock too many. The 32-year-old utility back, who made his mark at full-back, has not played since suffering a bad blow to the head in a match for his Japanese club Kintetsu in the middle of last year. MacDonald played 56 Tests over eight years for the All Blacks, making his debut in 2000 against Scotland.

Basket, NBA: Don Nelson set a new NBA record for coaching wins when his Golden State Warriors beat Minnesota Timberwolves 116-107 on Wednesday, his 1,333rd victory as a coach. Nelson, who has also coached Dallas Mavericks, New York Knicks and Milwaukee Bucks, surpassed Hall of Famer Lenny Wilkens's mark with the win, prompting his team to douse their coach in water and soda. Though he has led four teams during his career, Nelson has never reached an NBA Finals.
