Trezeguet: A man has been jailed for three years and four months for trying to extort money from Juventus striker David Trezeguet. A Turin court also ordered Fabrizio Corona to pay €25,000 in damages to Trezeguet. Corona had taken photographs of Trezeguet outside a bar and said he would publish the pictures unless the player gave him money.

Pique: Real Madrid's elimination from the Champions League will make it harder for Barca to retain their La Liga title, according to defender Gerard Pique. "Now they will be focused only on the league and that means they will lose very few points," Spain international Pique said. "Things will be more difficult."

Gargano: Napoli midfielder Walter Gargano has agreed to extend his contract with the Serie A club until 2014-15. The Uruguayan has been with Napoli three years as the southerners have made a priority of tying down their start players in recent months.

New boss: Businessman Greg Clarke said his experience of helping Leicester City out of financial crisis would be invaluable to the Football League after he was confirmed as its new chairman yesterday. The 52-year-old former chairman of Championship club Leicester, takes over from Brian Mawhinney.

Woodgate: Tottenham centre-back Jonathan Woodgate has undergone surgery in Australia in attempt to cure his long-standing groin problem. The 30-year-old is unlikely to play again this season.

Alert: Security has been beefed up for Paris SG's home match against Sochaux today with 1,000 police to be on duty. The game will be PSG's first at Parc des Princes since a fan suffered life-threatening injuries in a fight between rival Paris supporters before a match against Olympique Marseille on Feb. 28.

Skiing: Lindsey Vonn, of the US, clinched the women's overall World Cup title for the third year running by winning the super-G race in Germany, yesterday. Vonn made sure of the title with one race left in the season. She also won the super-G and downhill categories. Vonn, skiing last, was already assured of the crown after Maria Riesch, her only rival who needed a top-two finish to maintain her challenge, was pushed into third place.

Winter games: Polish cross-country skier Kornelia Marek tested positive for a banned substance during the Vancouver Olympics last month, the Polish Olympic Committee said. The national committee said her A sample had turned in a positive test for an unnamed substance following her participation in the 4x5km relay event on Feb. 25. Poland, with Marek in the team, finished sixth in the women's 4x5km relay and ninth in the team sprint.

Horse racing: Jockey Sam Thomas is in a stable condition after being airlifted to hospital following a fall from a horse at the gallops of champion trainer Paul Nicholls on Thursday. Thomas won the 2008 Gold Cup on Denman but was due to partner outsider Tricky Trickster in next week's big race at Cheltenham. The four-day festival, the highlight of the British jumps racing season, starts on Tuesday.

Golf: Malaysia will open its first national golf caddy academy next month, capable of training 100 bag carriers a year. The facility in Pulau Carey, initiated by the Kuala Lumpur Golf and Country Club, would offer caddies full-time employment contracts. The academy would give three-month courses to 30 people at a time with the aim of boosting the numbers of quality professional caddies in the golfing industry.

Basket, NBA: Orlando Magic stormed to a season-high seventh consecutive win with a 111-82 rout of the Chicago Bulls. Vince Carter scored a team-high 23 points in just 26 minutes as Orlando outscored their opponents 65-33 during the first half to quickly put the contest out of reach. Orlando (46-20) posted five players in double-figures for scoring to maintain their Southeast Division lead at four games over the Atlanta Hawks.

Rugby Union: All Blacks utility back Tamati Ellison has accepted a lucrative move to a Japanese club, which would end any hopes he had of being involved in the 2011 World Cup in New Zealand. Ellison would activate a get-out clause in his New Zealand Rugby Union contract and miss the domestic provincial championship for Wellington. The NZRU has a policy of only selecting players based in New Zealand for the All Blacks.
