KALLON: Former Inter striker Mohamed Kallon has joined Chinese Super League club Shaanxi. The 30-year-old forward is the highest profile foreign signing for a top flight Chinese club for the upcoming season. Shaanxi finished 12th in the league last season.

CECH: Chelsea goalkeeper Petr Cech was named Czech Republic player of the year for the third time this week. The 27-year-old 72-times capped Cech edged out veteran striker Milan Baros, who plays for Galatasaray, and Bordeaux midfielder Jaroslav Plasil.

CRICKET: Former Australia Prime Minister John Howard has been nominated by the Australian and New Zealand boards to serve as International Cricket Council (ICC) president from 2012. The ICC's rotation policy requires an Australasian candidate to fill the role from 2012.

MOTOR RACING: CNN International will sponsor Lotus F1 in a long-term deal. The agreement will see the news network's branding on the race cars, drivers' overalls and all team clothing from this season.

RUGBY UNION: Wales flanker Andy Powell was banned from driving for 15 months for driving a golf buggy on a motorway slip road while over the drink-driving limit. The 28-year-old British and Irish Lions player pleaded guilty to driving a mechanically-propelled vehicle while unfit through drink.
