Iwelumo: Bristol City have signed Chris Iwelumo on a month-long emergency loan deal from Wolves. The Scotland international, 31, has seen his chances limited in the Premier League after sustaining a metatarsal injury during pre-season. Iwelumo has made just three starts and seven substitute appearances for Mick McCarthy's men this term.

Canales: Real Madrid have agreed to buy teenager Sergio Canales from Racing Santander on a six-year contract starting from July 2010. The attacking midfielder, who turns 19 this week, has burst onto the scene in recent weeks with a string of impressive performances and some eye-catching goals. Spanish media reported the deal was worth about five million euros.

Giresse: Gabon will not renew the contract of coach Alain Giresse after their elimination in the first round of the Africa Cup finals. The 54-year-old former France international is the latest coaching victim of the recently completed finals in Angola after Benin, Mali and Nigeria all made changes.

Benayoun: Midfielder Yossi Benayoun has given Liverpool manager Rafael Benitez a welcome fitness boost by returning to training after a broken rib. The Israel international has not played since sustaining the injury late on in the FA Cup fourth-round replay defeat at home to Reading on January 13.

Molowny dies: Former Real Madrid player and coach Luis Molowny has died at the age of 84, the La Liga club said. Tenerife-born Molowny, a midfielder who represented Spain seven times, spent 11 seasons with Real as a player from the mid-1940s, winning two league titles and one European Cup.

Sanchez: Hugo Sanchez, who was sacked as coach of La Liga club Almeria in December, is hoping for a job offer from a Spanish club. "I am waiting for an interesting offer in the summer from a club in the Spanish league, because if there is one thing I am sure about it's that I want to continue in Spanish football," the former Real Madrid striker.

Cricket: Afghanistan's fairytale story in the world of cricket continued yesterday as they defeated hosts UAE to reach their first major tournament, the World Twenty20 finals in the West Indies, which runs from April 30 to May 16. The Afghans won by four wickets.

Ice Hockey: Two CSKA Sofia players have been banned for life for attacking the referee during a league match against city rivals Slavia this month. The federation suspended Angel Stumbev and Domeniko Evtimov for an unspecified period last week but then decided to impose life bans at an extraordinary meeting of its managing committee.

Golf: Tiger Woods may have been the world's best golfer when he was endorsing Buick automobiles, but he did little to help sell cars, General Motors chief Bob Lutz said. "We weren't too lucky with Tiger Woods," said Lutz. Later, asked by reporters if it was true that Woods did not boost Buick sales, Lutz said, "I don't think so."

Tennis: Andy Roddick out-muscled Tomas Berdych 7-6 7-6 in a tight contest to earn a place in the final four of the $530,000 San Jose Open. Roddick, who is chasing a fourth title at the hardcourt tournament, set up a semi-final against compatriot Sam Querrey.
