Malago: Serie A strugglers Siena have signed Marco Malago on loan from Chievo until the end of the season. The 31-year-old full-back had made only two appearances for the 'Flying Donkeys' this season.

Basile: Boca Juniors coach Alfio Basile resigned following his team's humiliating 3-1 defeat by bitter rivals River Plate in a summer-recess friendly. Basile, whose side fell to River in Mar del Plata on Wednesday, was unable to build a successful team in his second spell at Boca since his return last July.

Figueroa: Much-travelled former Argentina striker Luciano Figueroa has returned to his first club Rosario Central from Genoa. Figueroa, who began his career at Central in 2001 and played for Argentina at the 2004 Copa America, signed a two-year contract, the club said.

Diarra: Real Madrid midfielder Mahamadou Diarra has been ruled out of action for the next fortnight due to a knee problem. The 28-year-old returned from Africa Cup duty with Mali this week suffering from pain in his right knee.

Henry: Barcelona striker Thierry Henry has made a 56,000-euro donation to French NGO Medecins sans Frontieres as a contribution to rescue efforts in earthquake-ravaged Haiti. "Our striker has collaborated with Medecins sans Frontieres and has decided to give 56,000 euros to help the Haitian population," the Catalan club said.

Ibra: Barca striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic, who has struggled to find the net recently, has said he needs to improve his contribution to the side. "I am playing badly. I have to do more. I haven't done well in the last two matches and I know I can play much better," he said.

Salvio: Atletico Madrid have signed Argentina forward Eduardo Salvio from Lanus. The 19-year-old passed a medical and was presented at the Calderon, where he joins up with international team-mate Sergio Aguero.

The 2008 champion has now won three of the four stages and holds a lead of 20 seconds with two days remaining.

Figure skating: Russia's Yevgeny Plushenko kissed the ice after showing his rivals he has no intention of giving up his Olympic crown next month by easily winning gold at the European figure skating championships in Tallinn, on Thursday. The two skaters making their comebacks after absences from the sport beat those who had been keeping the podium warm for them with Switzerland's Stephane Lambiel taking the silver.

Basket, NBA: LeBron James continued his reign over the Los Angeles Lakers, recording 37 points as the Cleveland Cavaliers claimed a 93-87 victory to sweep the season series against the defending champions. James recorded 12 points in the fourth quarter including the go-ahead lay-in with 40 seconds remaining. Kobe Bryant scored 31 points and became the youngest player to reach 25,000 after converting a free-throw in the first half.

Formula One: Jenson Button is to have a footbridge named after him in his home town of Frome. "The bridge is going to be built anyway so we decided it would be a good idea to name it after him," said town mayor Damon Hooton. Button has already had at least one baby named after him - he was introduced to eight-week-old Jenson Lewis Sutton at a show last week.
