Frings: Experienced midfielder Torsten Frings will not be part of Germany's World Cup squad, national team coach Joachim Loew said yesterday. The 33-year-old Werder Bremen captain, who has 79 caps, last played for Germany in February 2009 in a 1-0 loss to Norway.

United debts: Debts at Manchester United's parent company hit £716.5 million ($1.17 billion) in the year to June 2009 due in part to high interest payments, its accounts showed yesterday. Accounts for Manchester United's holding company Red Football Joint Ventures Limited showed the debt had risen by 17 million pounds in the year. Net interest for the period was £68.5m.

Kazim: Turkey midfielder Kazim Kazim has joined Toulouse on loan from Fenerbahce, the Ligue 1 side said. The England-born Kazim, 23, is on loan until the end of the season.

Lopez: Catania have signed former Barcelona forward Maxi Lopez, the Serie A strugglers said. The Argentine, who had been on loan at Brazil's Gremio from FK Moscow, has agreed a four-year deal with the Sicilian club. Lazio had been strongly linked in the media with the forward along with England's Birmingham City and West Ham United.

Motor racing: Former Ferrari head of aerodynamics John Iley has joined McLaren in the same role, a spokesman for the British-based Formula One team said yesterday. The Briton, who left Ferrari last July after the Italian team's 2009 car was eclipsed by eventual champions Brawn GP and Red Bull, took up his new job at the start of the year. Ferrari's new chief aerodynamicist is Marco de Luca while Nikolas Tombazis, who returned to the Italian team from McLaren in 2006, is chief designer.

Boxing: Amir Khan could make his American debut in April after the World Boxing Association announced a "tentative agreement" for him to defend his light-welterweight title against mandatory challenger Marcos Maidana. Khan, 23, joined forces with American giant Golden Boy Promotions at the weekend, citing his desire to "expand my fan base to the United States and around the world". The Bolton fighter seems set to make a second successive mandatory defence, following December's first-round blow-out of previous leading contender Dmitriy Salita.

Golf: World number four Lee Westwood received the European Tour Players' Player of the Year award yesterday, the eve of his first appearance of 2010 at the Abu Dhabi Championship. The 36-year-old Briton became the second winner of the trophy that was first handed out to Ireland's Padraig Harrington in 2008.

Cycling: Germany's Andre Greipel bolstered his chances of winning a second Tour Down Under after cruising to a second straight stage win yesterday. The HTC Columbia rider won the sprint finish into the town of Hahndorf in the Adelaide Hills at the end of the 133-kilometre stage starting from the town of Gawler northeast of Adelaide. Greipel has a 14 second lead over Henderson and Gert Steegmans in the overall classification for the race which finishes on Sunday.
