Guilty verdict: Ashley Cole was found guilty of speeding yesterday despite telling police he was trying to escape press photographers in his Lamborghini car. Chelsea defender Cole could be banned from driving after being caught driving at 104 miles (167 kilometres) per hour in a 50 mph zone in southwest London in November 2008. He is due to be sentenced on January 29.

Arrested: Victor Agali, a Nigerian-born footballer for Greek club Levadiakos, has been arrested at Schiphol airport near Amsterdam for carrying two fake passports. Upon further investigation, the 31-year-old striker in transit at Schiphol on a voyage from Lagos to Athens, turned out to have two sets of fake travel documents.

Ribery: Bayern Munich playmaker Franck Ribery's injury-plagued season continued yesterday when he was forced to miss the start of a training camp in Dubai to have his big toenails removed. The Bavarian club said the problem flared up during their last practice before leaving Munich for the Middle East.

Carvalho: Brazilian international Daniel Carvalho has joined Qatari club Al Arabi from CSKA Moscow. Attacking midfielder Carvalho, who became the first foreigner to win the Russian League player-of-the-year award in 2005, claimed the last of his three caps in 2006.

Veloso: Fiorentina are on the verge of completing the transfer of Sporting Lisbon midfielder Miguel Veloso, an ideal replacement for Felipe Melo, who was sold to Juventus in the summer. Reports said Veloso has accepted the switch with a four-year contract worth £1.3m per season plus performance-related bonuses.

Athletics: Stephanie Twell will compete on Scottish soil for the first time since switching nationality from England at the BUPA Great Edinburgh International Cross Country next Saturday. The 20-year-old world junior 1,500 metres champion is tipped to be a genuine contender for a medal at the 2012 London Olympics. She accepted an offer to represent Scotland last July and opened her campaign in her new national vest by winning the Gateshead International Cross Country in November.

Tennis: World no.10 Jo-Wilfred Tsonga has been forced to pull out of the Qatar Open because of a wrist injury, hampering the Frenchman's Australian Open preparations. The 2008 Australian Open runner-up also withdrew from a six-man invitational event in Abu Dhabi last week after injuring himself in training. The Australian Open begins in Melbourne on January 18.

Basket,NBA: Chris Bosh scored 22 points and became the leading scorer in club history on Sunday as he led Toronto to a 91-86 NBA victory over San Antonio. Bosh nailed a jump shot from the top of the key with 1:39 remaining in the third quarter to surpass Vince Carter's franchise record of of 9,420 points. Bosh now has 9,428 points. He was honoured with a video tribute.

Rugby: Australia's new Super rugby team will be allowed to recruit up to 10 foreign players when they join the expanded competition in 2011, the Australian Rugby Union (ARU) said. The ARU currently has a limit of two foreign players for each of their four existing Super teams but has agreed to bend the rules for the new Melbourne-based franchise.

Horse Racing: A gambler who threatened to kill a racehorse in a bid to stop it taking part in a race after he forgot to place his syndicate's bet was given a suspended jail term. Andrew Rodgerson, 26, warned a stud manager not to run 2008 St Leger winner Conduit in a valuable race at Ascot after he forgot to place the accumulator bet. He panicked when he realised that victory for Conduit in last July's King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes would lead to the syndicate expecting winnings of £50,000.
