Totti: Francesco Totti has agreed to extend his contract with Roma to June 30, 2014 in a deal that will see him stay on at the club when his playing days are over. Under the agreement, the 33-year-old Italian forward will be guaranteed a place on the club's technical staff when he stops playing.

Wolves: Wolves have been asked to explain their decision to field a weakened side for Tuesday's 3-0 defeat by Manchester United, the Premier League said. Wolves manager Mick McCarthy, whose team face fellow strugglers Burnley on Sunday, selected a virtual second-string line-up for the Old Trafford defeat which put them back in the relegation zone.

Recoba: Former Uruguay striker Alvaro Recoba has parted company with Panionios after both parties agreed to terminate his contract, the Greek club said. The former Inter player joined Panionios in 2008 but injuries have interrupted the 33-year-old's form this season.

Pepe replacement: Real Madrid will likely find a replacement for injured central defender Pepe from within the club and not buy anyone in the January transfer period, according to sporting director Miguel Pardeza. The Portuguese is out for around six months after he tore a knee ligament.

Euro route: North Korea international An Yong-hak is seeking a move from South Korean club Suwon Bluewings to Japan or Europe before he represents his country at next year's World Cup finals, according to his agent. The Japanese-born midfielder moved from J-League side Nagoya Grampus to South Korea with Busan in 2006, moving on to Suwon two years later.

Hockey: Holders Germany and favourites Australia have been drawn in opposite groups for the men's World Cup in New Delhi, the International Hockey Federation said yesterday. Top-ranked Germany, the Olympic champions, will face Netherlands, South Korea, New Zealand, Canada and Argentina in the pool phase in the Feb. 28-March 13 event. World number two Australia, who beat Germany 5-3 to win a record 10th Champions Trophy title on Sunday, have been drawn with hosts India, Spain, England, Pakistan and South Africa.

Motor racing: Lotus F1 principal Tony Fernandes has risen to Richard Branson's challenge for the loser of the two F1 team owners next season to serve as a stewardess on the winner's airline. Fernandes, the founder of AirAsia, said last week that his new team had to finish ahead of Branson's Virgin Racing. Branson replied at the presentation of his team on Tuesday by suggesting a less painful solution. "He has an airline, we have an airline and if we beat him he can come and work on our airline as a Virgin stewardess," he said.

Baseball: A group led by Pittsburgh sports attorney Chuck Greenberg was picked as the lead bidder for the Texas Rangers baseball team being sold by sports tycoon Tom Hicks, but still must finalise the deal and get the approval of the league's owners and Hicks's creditors. Terms of the deal were not disclosed but analysts had expected the club to attract bids of at least $500 million to $550 million.
