Reyes: Atletico Madrid winger Jose Antonio Reyes was released from hospital yesterday with a neck strain and should be able to return to action later in the week. Reyes had a scan and spent the night under observation after tumbling awkwardly during Sunday's 2-1 league defeat at home to Villarreal. He was carried off the pitch wearing a neck brace.

ESPN deal: England's Premier League confirmed yesterday it had reached agreement with broadcaster ESPN to screen 43 live matches from next season. The three-year contract is a boost for the domestic game in England which was hit by the collapse of Setanta earlier this year. Setanta shared the rights with Sky Sports.

Worthington: Northern Ireland manager Nigel Worthington has declared his interest in the vacant Sheffield Wednesday job. Worthington spent over a decade at Hillsborough as a player and, with his Irish FA contract due to expire at the turn of the year, he is considering his options. Negotiations with Northern Ireland are ongoing but an agreement currently looks far from assured.

Shankly: Liverpool will use tomorrow's home match against Wigan to commemorate the 50th anniversary of legendary manager Bill Shankly taking over at the club. Dec. 14 marked the date when the fearsome Scot officially began work as Reds boss. And with the match against the Latics the nearest Anfield fixture to the 50th anniversary of Shankly's first game in charge - a 4-0 home defeat by Cardiff on December 19 1959 - the club will mark the occasion.

Banfield: Banfield won their first Argentine league title despite a 2-0 defeat at Boca Juniors on the final day of the season on Sunday. Newell's Old Boys, Banfield's only remaining challengers who began the day two points behind, also lost 2-0 at home to San Lorenzo.

Motorcycling: Jorge Lorenzo has told MotoGP world champion Valentino Rossi that their Yamaha team will decide their future and not the Italian. Rossi, who says having a strong team-mate like Lorenzo is not ideal, is considering whether to stay at Yamaha, move to Ducati or switch to car racing when his contract runs out at the end of next year. "Valentino shouldn't decide the riders for 2011. It's Yamaha's choice, we are just employees," the Spaniard said.

American football: The unbeaten Indianapolis Colts broke the NFL record for consecutive regular season wins when they held off the Denver Broncos 28-16 on Sunday for their 22nd successive victory. Peyton Manning passed for four touchdowns, three to Dallas Clark, as Indianapolis eclipsed the New England Patriots' string of 21 victories between 2006 and 2008.

Basket, NBA: LeBron James scored a season-high 44 points to help the Cleveland Cavaliers see off the improving Oklahoma City Thunder 102-89 on Sunday. A 14-0 fourth-quarter run fuelled by James and a half-court shot from Mo Williams finally broke the Cavaliers free of the Thunder, who had won their last two games.

Golf: Thai golfer Thongchai Jaidee has been voted Player of the Year by his peers on the Asian Tour after winning an unprecedented third order of merit title. The 40-year-old won twice on the tour in Indonesia and South Korea to boost his career tally to a record 12 Asian titles.

Horse racing: Former champion jockey Kieren Fallon has courted fresh controversy by saying there is a drugs problem within British horse racing. Fallon added the issue of drug-taking among the racing fraternity was especially acute in British flat racing's headquarters town of Newmarket. Fallon, 44, only returned to riding in September after serving an 18-month ban for a second failed drugs test.
