Benaglio: Swiss keeper Diego Benaglio has agreed a one-year contract extension with Wolfsburg that will keep him with the Bundesliga champions until 2013. The 26-year-old, who joined Wolfsburg in 2008, is one of several starting players to have extended their deals with the club.

Milan: Milan goalkeeper Marco Storari and midfielder Gennaro Gattuso will miss tomorrow's Champions League game at Real Madrid through injury. The pair were forced out of Sunday's 2-1 win over Roma with thigh and knee problems respectively but had been expected to recover for the Group C game.

Negredo: Sevilla striker Alvaro Negredo will miss today's Champions League Group G match at Stuttgart because of an infection. The absence of the Spain international, who is resting at home, means Sevilla travel to Germany with three strikers, Luis Fabiano, Arouna Kone and Frederic Kanoute.

Giggs: Veteran midfielder Ryan Giggs is doubtful for Manchester United's Champions League clash against CSKA Moscow in the Russian capital tomorrow. The Welshman suffered a knock towards the end of Saturday's 2-1 win over Bolton.

Livorno: Serie A bottom side Livorno sacked de facto coach Gennaro Ruotolo, with official boss Vittorio Russo also appearing to be on the brink of losing his job. Ruotolo led the side to promotion last season but did not have the necessary coaching badges for the top-flight so Russo, who had the qualifications, was brought in to shadow him.

Defoe: Tottenham striker Jermain Defoe apologised for his red card against Portsmouth after getting a dressing down from Harry Redknapp. Redknapp was furious when Defoe stamped on Aaron Mokoena in the 2-1 win at Fratton Park. Redknapp said: "Yes. He's sorry for what's done. I gave him a rollicking in front of all the lads, to be fair."

Cycling: Norwegian champion Kurt-Asle Arvesen has joined Team Sky from Saxo Bank, the Danish outfit said. Saxo Bank said Arvesen, 34, has won two stages of the Giro d'Italia, in 2003 and 2007, and one on the 2008 Tour de France.

Basketball: The New York Knicks defeated Maccabi Tel Aviv 106-91, waiting out an odd delay in the third quarter when Maccabi coach Pini Gershon declined to leave the floor after he was ejected by officials. The game between the NBA club and the Euroleague team was delayed for eight minutes in the third quarter after Gershon received two technical fouls in quick succession.

Golf: Scotland's Martin Laird won the Shriners Hospitals Open on Sunday, beating George McNeill with a birdie at the third play-off hole for his first US PGA Tour victory. With the triumph, Laird secured his US playing privileges for two seasons, and pocketed a 756,000-dollar winner's prize.

Rugby Union: Toulouse flanker Thierry Dusautoir is to take over as captain of France from Lionel Nallet, coach Marc Lievremont said. The 27-year-old Ivory Coast-born player stood in for the injured Nallet during the summer tour of Australia and New Zealand and impressed in the way he handled the job. Dusautoir won the first of his 25 caps in the 62-14 win over Romania in June, 2006.
