Licata: Monaco striker Alexandre Licata has been ruled out for the rest of the season with an ankle injury. Licata, who was hurt in training on Monday, is Monaco's top scorer this season with seven goals in Ligue 1.

Zenit signing: Zenit St Petersburg have signed Portugal defender Fernando Meira on a three-year contract from Galatasaray. Media reports said big spenders Zenit, the UEFA Cup holders, have paid six million euros for the 30-year-old Meira.

Beckham: David Beckham is likely to be fit for Milan's Serie A game at Siena on Sunday despite injuring his ankle in training. "It's not too bad," the England midfielder said. "I twisted it but I've had a lot of treatment. I was actually running on the sand this morning. I still won't train for the next day or two but it should be okay for the weekend."

Behrami: West Ham United's Switzerland midfielder Valon Behrami is expected to be out for at least six months with a cruciate ligament injury in his left knee. The 23-year-old was hurt in the 1-0 Premier League win over Manchester City on March 1 after making a good start to his career in London this season following a move from Lazio.

Basket, NBA: LA Lakers forward Lamar Odom has been suspended for one game for leaving the bench during a fight. The incident occurred with two seconds remaining in the third quarter of the Portland Trail Blazers' 111-94 victory over the Lakers at Rose Garden on Monday. Lakers guard Trevor Ariza hit Portland's Rudy Fernandez on the head as he took off for the basket, sending the Spaniard crashing to the court. A brief scuffle ensued after players from both benches raced on to the floor.

Alpine skiing: Lindsey Vonn capped an impressive season by retaining the overall World Cup title with victory in the final downhill in Are yesterday. In the Swedish fog, the 24-year-old American bagged her eighth World Cup race of the season in 1:42.49. Her title rival Maria Riesch, of Germany, did not bow out without a fight, taking second place, 0.40 seconds behind. Vonn leads the overall standings by 389 points with three events (and a maximum of 300 points) to go to the end of the season.

Cycling: Briton Bradley Wiggins has pulled out of the Paris-Nice race to attend the funeral of his wife's grandmother, his Garmin-Slipstream team said yesterday. Double Olympic pursuit champion Wiggins did not start the fourth stage of the "Race to the Sun", a 173.5-km ride from Vichy to St Etienne.
