Huntelaar injured: Ajax striker Klaas Jan Huntelaar injured his ankle during his side's 5-2 home win over Sparta Rotterdam in the Dutch league yesterday. Huntelaar headed home the opener after 16 minutes, from an assist by Kennedy Bakircioglu, but limped off the pitch before the interval after twisting his ankle. The striker is now doubtful for Wednesday's cup tie against Volendam and next Sunday's clash against PSV. Ajax are second in the league with 22 points after 10 matches.

Allagui decision: Tunisia have named Germany-based Sami Allagui in their squad for a friendly in Ghana on Nov. 19, making a bid to get the striker to commit his international football future to the north African country. The Greuther Furth player, who has netted 10 goals in 11 games in the German second division this season, is considering whether to play for Tunisia, where he was born, or Germany where he was brought up and whose citizenship he also holds.

Novo chance: Spanish-born Rangers forward Nacho Novo has said he would jump at the chance to play for Scotland if the country's federation changed their rules and made an approach for him. "I am ambitious and want to be successful at everything I do. Playing at a European championship or a World Cup is one of my dreams," Novo said.

Lillo hit: The Spanish second division match between Real Sociedad and Eibar on Saturday was suspended in stoppage time with the score at 0-0 when home coach Juan Manuel Lillo was hit on the head by a bottle thrown from the stands. Lillo required stitches and a Socieded fan was arrested by police in their Anoeta stadium.

Kalmar title: Kalmar won Sweden's premiership for the first time yesterday, securing the title after a 2-2 draw with Halmstad. Kalmar, from the south east, had built up a lead going into the final rounds before runners-up IF Elfsborg mounted a late challenge.

Swimming: Former Australia coach John Carew, 81, has died after a long illness, Swimming Australia announced. Carew was best known as the mastermind behind Australian long distance swimmer Kieren Perkins, who won the 1,500 metres freestyle gold medals at the 1992 and 1996 Olympics.

Basketball, NBA: Chicago Bulls guard Kirk Hinrich will undergo thumb surgery this week and could be sidelined for up to 12 weeks. Hinrich tore a ulnar collateral ligament in his right thumb during Friday's victory over Phoenix. He will undergo surgery tomorrow and could be sidelined until early February, missing up to 43 games. A six-year veteran with the Bulls, the 2003 first-round draft pick was averaging 8.3 points and four assists per game.

Golf: Anthony Kim's first tournament as a European Tour player came to an ignominious end when he was disqualified from the HSBC Champions in Shanghai yesterday. The 23-year-old American said he had damaged his driver on a sprinkler head in his third round at the $5 million event, falling foul of a rule forbidding the use of a club "damaged other than in the course of play".
