Chicago Marathon: Kenyan Evans Cheruiyot won his first Chicago Marathon yesterday, while Russia's Lidiya Grigoryeva claimed the women's title in her Chicago debut. Cheruiyot, 26, finished in a personal best time of two hours, six minutes and 25 seconds after pulling ahead of fellow countryman David Mandago, who placed second. Kenya's Timothy Cherigat won third place in the men's race. Grigoryeva, 34, finished in 2:27:17, followed by Russian Alevtina Biktimirova in second place.

Boyd: Striker Kris Boyd said he would not play for Scotland again as long as George Burley remains the national team manager. Boyd, 25, who has scored seven times in 15 appearances for his country, was an unused substitute during their 0-0 draw with Norway in their Group Nine World Cup qualifying match at Hampden Park on Saturday. Boyd has played just 28 minutes of the six games Scotland have played since Burley took charge of the team in January.

Guiza: Spain striker Daniel Guiza says he cannot see himself completing his four-year contract with struggling Turkish club Fenerbahce, who he joined from Real Mallorca in July. "Things aren't going well, the team isn't giving what it has to give and it is bad. I don't think I will last long (in Istanbul)," Guiza told Marca.

CONCACAF: Sven-Goran Eriksson's Mexico slumped to a 1-0 defeat in Jamaica in a World Cup qualifier last weekend while the United States routed Cuba 6-1 after their opponents reportedly suffered two defections before the game. The US win guaranteed them a place in the final stage of the qualifying tournament next year and they were joined by Costa Rica. Mexico, who have often struggled on their visits to the Caribbean, were beaten by a 14th-minute Ricardo Fuller goal.

Fans riot: Angry Senegalese fans attacked the country's soccer federation headquarters on Saturday, smashing windows, after the national team was eliminated from qualifying for the 2010 World Cup by drawing 1-1 with Gambia. After the draw, which also eliminated the Teranga Lions from the next African Nations Cup, furious supporters set up burning barricades around the stadium and clashed with police.

Vieira, Gallas out: Patrick Vieira and William Gallas have withdrawn from the France squad for the friendly against Tunisia in Paris tomorrow. Inter midfielder Vieira picked up a calf injury on Saturday while warming up for the World Cup qualifier in Romania, which ended in a 2-2 draw. Gallas pulled out of the game against Romania with a thigh injury.

Ballesteros: Five-times major winner Seve Ballesteros said yesterday tests carried out over the last few days have revealed he has a brain tumour. The 51-year-old Spaniard was taken to Madrid's La Paz hospital last week after suffering dizziness and a brief loss of consciousness.
