Downing: Two people have been arrested following a complaint by England winger Stewart Downing regarding the handling of his financial affairs. "Stewart made a formal complaint to Cleveland Police who have since been investigating matters. This led to the arrest of a man and a woman relating to the investigation," a statement read.

Vagner: Brazilian-born defender Lucio Vagner has been forced to pull out of Bulgaria squad to face Montenegro in their 2010 World Cup's opening qualifier on Saturday. The 32-year-old Levski Sofia left-back suffered a groin strain during his club's match against Belarus's BATE Borisov in the Champions League.

United No.2: Alex Ferguson has appointed Mike Phelan as his new assistant replacing Carlos Queiroz, who became Portugal coach in the close season, the club announced yesterday. Phelan, a former United midfielder, previously held the role of first team coach.

Silva: Midfielder David Silva has withdrawn from the Spain squad for their World Cup qualifiers against Bosnia and Armenia with an ankle problem, the Spanish Football Federation's medical services have said. A replacement has not been called up.

Gijon fined: Sporting Gijon have been fined 3,000 euros by the the Spanish Football Federation's disciplinary committee after fans directed racist chants at Getafe's Ecuadorian forward Joffre Guerron during a Primera Liga match.

Nantes: Nantes have named former Toulouse coach Elie Baup as the replacement for Michel Der Zakarian, the French Ligue 1 side. Nantes, promoted this season to the top division, have made a poor start and are lying in last place in the league after securing just one point from four matches.

Amelia out: A back problem has forced reserve goalkeeper Marco Amelia out of Italy's squad for the World Cup qualifiers against Cyprus on Saturday and Georgia. Coach Marcello Lippi has not yet called up a replacement.

Milan fans: Milan supporters have been banned from their team's Serie A match at Genoa on Sept. 14, an Interior Ministry source told Reuters. The game is considered high-risk after a Genoa fan was killed in a knife attack before the same fixture in 1995.

Anti Niemi: Finland keeper Antti Niemi has retired from football his former club Fulham confirmed yesterday. Niemi, 36, who won 67 caps for his country, previously played for Southampton, Charlton, FC Copenhagen, Rangers and Hearts.

Boxing: Former WBO featherweight champion Scott Harrison, 31, was jailed for eight months on Tuesday for assaulting his girlfriend and drink-driving. In December 2006 Harrison gave up his WBO featherweight title shortly after spending five weeks in a Spanish jail on assault charges. The troubled Glasgow boxer had held the title for four years but failed to cut his weight in time for a challenge match.

Golf: Elin Woods, wife of world number one Tiger, is expecting the couple's second child. "I have some wonderful news to report," the 14-times major champion told his website. "Elin and I are proud to announce we are expecting our second child in late winter." The couple's first baby, daughter Sam Alexis, was born on June 18, 2007. Woods has been out of action since winning the US Open at Torrey Pines, California in June.
