The Boston Celtics survived a furious fightback by the Los Angeles Lakers to hold on for a 108-102 win on Sunday, sending their rivals back to the West Coast trailing the best-of-seven NBA finals 2-0. The Lakers must win at least two of the three games at home or watch the Celtics return to Boston with a 17th title.

Cricket

Former Australian test opener Justin Langer was recognised in the Queen's Birthday Honours List yesterday. Langer was made a Member of the Order of Australia for his service to cricket and the community, including his involvement with children's and cancer research charity organisations.

Tennis

Swede Bjorn Borg and American John McEnroe, who between them won 18 grand slams in the 1970s and 80s, will go head-to-head in an exhibition match in Bangkok on Nov. 22.

Swimming

Italian world champion Filippo Magnini beat French world record holder Alain Bernard and Australian rival Eamon Sullivan to win the 100m free at Rome's Seven Hills meeting on Sunday in 48.35s. Bernard and Sullivan finished joint second in 48.41 seconds.

Golf

American Justin Leonard gave himself a perfect boost for next week's US Open, and the Ryder Cup in September, by winning the St Jude Championship in a play-off in Memphis last weekend. The 35-year-old, who has not played at the Ryder Cup since 1999, clinched his 12th PGA Tour title at the second extra hole. After squandering a one-stroke lead with two regulation holes remaining, Leonard edged out Australian Robert Allenby and Masters champion Trevor Immelman, of South Africa, with a 19-foot birdie putt.
