On Saturday, February 28, 2009, the St Monica Choir presented The Armed Man: A Mass for Peace by Karl Jenkins at the Mediterranean Conference Centre.

The unflinching loyalty of the choir, the numerous rehearsals and the meticulous demands of the director Suor Beniamina Portelli raised their performance to perfection.

Needless to say, the Malta Philarmonic Orchestra conducted by Michael Laus gave a new dimension to the musical interpretation while the huge cinema screen projected the visual historical records that enhanced the musical understanding. The appreciative audience, emotionally involved and gracefully entertained, gave a standing ovation lasting several minutes.

The performance, under the distinguished patronage of Archbishop Paul Cremona, formed an integral part of the 45th Anniversary Celebrations of the St Monica Choir set up in 1964.

This fund-raising event did certainly help the Augustine Sisters' role in the problem of abandoned children in the Philippines.

It was a splendid performance that honours Maltese musical education and cultural tradition.

All those patrons who missed this veritable classical performance should clamour for a repetition not only to help the missionary dedication of the Augustine Sisters but also to appreciate Maltese musical talent at its best.
