Scottish Premier League chief executive Neil Doncaster feels the police have been premature in handing out advice to call off matches after two of tomorrow’s fixtures fell victim to the cold snap.

Kilmarnock’s visit to Celtic Park and the match between Dundee United and Motherwell were postponed 48 hours before kick-off amid concerns for spectator safety.

Hamilton’s match against Hibernian at New Douglas Park is also a doubt with an inspection of the stadium and surrounding area scheduled for tomorrow.

The SPL took the unusual step of postponing all six fixtures the previous even earlier last week, with an announcement made on the Wednesday afternoon.

But Doncaster believes police forces should have waited before issuing their advice.

In a statement, Doncaster said: “I am slightly surprised that the police have issued advice so early, especially when a substantial thaw is forecast over the next two days.

“However, when police advice is on the grounds of safety, we have no choice but to postpone the games.”
