Crowds flocked to the Pumpkin Festival in Manikata yesterday to stock up on their supplies for Halloween, which will be marked this Saturday.

For others the visit to the small rural village was to taste a series of delicacies made from the pink-fleshed vegetable, including the traditional pumpkin pie and pumpkin soup, and sweet pumpkin and ricotta cheesecake.

Besides the star attraction of the festival’s eighth edition, there were plenty of other vegetables on sale, produced by Manikata farmers.

Vegetable arrangements added a touch of artistry to the activity.

According to the organisers Koperattiva Rurali Manikata, the fields around the Għajn Tuffieħa valley provide the ideal environment for pumpkins, allowing them to grow in abundance over the summer.
