Ħamrun Spartans 1
Senglea Athletic 1

Ħamrun Spartans dropped two precious points when they were held to a 1-1 draw by third-placed Senglea Athletic at the Tedesco Stadium.

The Spartans were looking to bag another win to keep the pace with leaders Gżira ahead of next weekend’s top-of-the-table clash but were denied by the ever-improving Senglea.

After yesterday’s draw Ħamrun have fallen three points behind Gżira while Senglea remained third on 32 points.

It was Ħamrun who created the first chance on 14 minutes when a Rodney Refalo grounder was saved by Jeffrey Farrugia while three minutes later Haruna Garba headed just wide.

Senglea were kept under pressure with the Spartans coming close twice in the space of a few minutes. First it was Saturday Nanapere who saw his shot blocked by Farrugia while minutes later Jake Grech’s inswinger just missed the target.

Gradually Senglea came more into the picture and five minutes from the break Ryan Dalli’s shot came off the post.

But a minute later Senglea struck. James Obaje Aud-Gustine controlled well to dart into the area and hit a low shot past Frederick Tabone.

Five minutes into the second half Mark Anthony Borg’s header just missed the Senglea goal while at the other end Denis Sytnik’s effort was blocked by Tabone.

Farrugia distinguished himself on the hour when pushing away Garba’s header.

The Spartans equalised on 70 minutes when Nanapere met Grech’s cross and headed the ball into the net.

Senglea created the last chance of the match on 76 minutes but Sytnik headed wide from close in.
