A Spanish man admitted in court to attacking a policeman who intervened when an argument over a broken table in a bar got out of hand.

Enric Sala Codina, 46, was charged with assaulting a police officer during the argument outside the bar in Tower Street, Sliema. The incident happened early on Tuesday.

He also pleaded guilty to being so drunk that he could not take good care of himself.

Magistrate Aaron Bugeja heard how the police intervened after an escalation of an argument over a broken table at a bar. During the argument, the police officer was pushed and suffered injuries to his shoulder.

The magistrate jailed him for three months suspended for a year and fined him €1,000 after police Inspector Jonathan Ransley called on the court to get the message across that “Malta is not a jungle”.

Lawyers Giannella de Marco and Gianluca Caruana Curran appeared for the man.
